WELLINGTON

Wellington, December 24. At the time of writing Wellington is almost bereft of folks of sporting proclivities. The metallicians are certainly about but most of their business consists of attending to wires from clients at a distance, whose favourite mode of investing is by means of “ no reply ’’ wires. The 'Wellington Cup and Telegraph is thus early claiming attention at the hands of backers. Local metallicians have opened books on the double, and several wagers have been booked at the odds of 100 to 1. The double totalisator has apparently educated the sporting public to double betting, and as long as the odds are liberal, the weights the horses are asked to carry are a matter of no concern to a certain class of backers. The weights for the Wellington Cup and Railway Handicap are - being < agerly looked forward to. The 'Wellington weight adjuster will get a capital line by witnessing the running at Auckland on Boxing Day. Mahutonga, Melodeon, Romeo, Ghoorka, and Starshoot will give an exhibition of their form in the Auckland Cup ; Golden Vein, Ailsa, Crichton, Tomorrow, and Hohoro are engaged in the Wellington Telegraph Handicap. As these horses will race in the Auckland Railway Handicap it should be an easy task to subsequently bring them together. A number of local and provincial owners would like the ’Wellington handicapper to witness the racing at M airarapa on January 2 and 3. Over thirty of the horses competing at M airarapa are included in the nominations for the Wellington Summer Meeting. In fairness to their owners the Wellinoton handicapper should witness their displays prior to framing his weights for his club.
