BOWLING.

(By the “ Skip.”)

The strong wind on Saturday rather spoilt bowling for accuracy could not be maintained. Despite this drawback al great many players took part in their favourite recreation and some keen games were fought out.

The Auckland Club’s green, being well sheltered from the wind, suffered least, but a number of players were away at the Mayor’s garden party and the muster was more scanty than usual.

Mr Fortescue, the well-known English bowler, arrived in Auckland by the Zealandia on Sunday. By the way, Mr Ledingham, who was his bowling partner in England, has not struck form since his return and is playing a very uncertain game. On Saturday James’ four beat the veteran’s quartette by 30 to 14, the losers scoring on only six out of twentyone heads.

Carlaw has beaten Holland in the Auckland Club Championship. In the first game there was only a point difference between the players, but at the next try Carlaw ran out lay 21 to 8. * * * * At Mount Eden in the Championship Singles Wenthall has beaten Rankin, while Ross ran away from Coe ; McGregor after a hard fight defeated C. Baker ; J. W. Jones defeated H. 0. Brown ; Martin easily beat Davis, while a number of other matches are partly completed. * * * * At Devonport, in the Championship Singles, Lelievre has beaten Armstrong after two very close games. Good reports continue to be received of the Gisborne Club’s greens, and all arrangements for the coming N.B.A. tournament are well forward. *♦. • • The Te Aroha tournament commences on Monday, January 2, when a start will be made with the play in the rink games at nine a.m. Entries close with the hon. sec. (The Aroha), at eight p.m. on Saturday, December 31, and will also be received by Mr Jas. Carlaw, of the Auckland Club, up till noon on Friday, December 30. *** ' * The annual tournament will be held at Rotorua on February 21, 22, and 23 next. There will be a rinks’ match (prizes, four gold medals) and pairs’ match (prizes, two gold medals), and entries for both events (2s 6d for each player) will close on February 20. The competitions are open to all members of clubs affiliated to an association, and in case of all clubs in the Auckland province players constituting a team or pair must all be members of the same club. The matches will be played under the rules of the . Auckland Bowling Association.
