ATHLETICS.

At a boxing tournament, held at Greymouth, P. Maloney beat G. Stewart in the Light-weight match, R. H. Hansbury won the Bantam-weight, J. Morrison carried off the Feather-weight, andGriffen won the Middle-weight on a foul and also won the Heavy-weight contest. * * * * I hear (writes “Prodigal”) that there is every likelihood of Stanley Rowley Zoning the spiked shoe again directly winter is over with a view to meeting the sprinter of the party when the American team visits these shores. With Rowley and Barker representing New South Wales, things will be interesting, indeed. * * * * Billy Murphy was not long getting a match in Sydney, for the veteran is to box Tim Hegarty at the National Sporting Club on Tuesday Week. * # * * Mr F. J. Ohlson, lion, secretary A.A.A., has received a letter from the secretary of the N.Z.A.A.A. (Mr East), intimating that the four principal centres and one or two of the smaller centres had notified the governing body of their willingness to guarantee the amounts required in connection with the proposed visit of a team of American athletes to the colonies. Mr East also added the welcome announcement that Arthur P. Duffy, champion 100 yards runner of the world, had signified his willingness to form One of the team, and that overtures were being made to Alfred Shrubb, the famous English distance runner, who it was hoped would also accept the invitation. The advent of such famous runners as those mentioned, to say nothing of other stars who may make the trip, should give athletics a big boom next season, and for this reason it is greatly to be desired that the team should come. * * * * Miss Lottie Dod, the lady golf champion of England, is a fine all-round athlete. She won the English (ladies’) lawn tennis championship in 1887-88, 1891-2-3, the championship of Ireland in 1887 ; the Irish ladies’ singles, the Irish mixed doubles championship with E. Renshaw, 1887 ; the Irish ladies’ doubles, 1892, with Miss Steedman ; the English mixed’ doubles with J. C. Kay, 1889, and with A. Dod, 1892 ; and the English ladies’ doubles championship in 1886-7-8 with Miss M. Langrishe. She is an expert hockey player, and represented England in the international match against Ireland.
