HAWKE S BAY.

Napier, October 13. The squire of Karamu has not lost much time in christening the first batch of the Birkenheads, the following names having been claimed for some of his foals : —Dreamer, bay colt by Birkenhead —Lullaby ; Manana, bay filly by Birkenhead —Taihoa ; Prizeman, bay colt by Birkenhead—Target; Zimmerman, brown colt by Birkenhead—Solitaire, and the following yearlings have had the undermentioned names selected for them : —Brown filly by Sir Launcelot —The Shrew, Miss Caudle ; Bay colt by Sir Launcelot—Lullaby, Oblivion ; Brown gelding by Sir Launcelot—Thame, Sir Tristram. During the week additions to the brood stock of the district, as under, have been made at Longlands :—Mousquetoon (Mousquetaire or Jet D’eau — Leonil) filly to Merriwee. At Karamu, Mount Ida (Apremont— Idalia) colt, Film (Eridisford —Margaret) colt, Content (Dreadnought—Lullaby/ filly, all to Birkenhead ; Goyt (Dreadnought—Thame/ filly to The Officer. At Te Mahanga, Secret (Mute—Mystery) filly to Torpedo. On the concluding day of the Hawke’s Bay J.C. late meeting, Merry Kate was purchased by Mr L. Cottle. The mare, who is now under the tuition of Rollo, competed in her new owner’s interest in the Flying Hack on Thursday. Mr George Hunter, of Porangahau, experienced a misfortune last Monday when Wonderland joined the great majority. The Hon. J. D. Ormond, when he heard of the bad luck that had befallen .Mr Hunter, imihediately placed Renown at his disposal for this season. Dreadnought’s son should assuredly have a good opportunity for the Porangahau stud master has some choice matrons running in his breeding paddock. Wonderland has most certainly proved that he could get a good useful class of horses, more especially at the leaping portion of the industry. A daughter of his, Evening, won a hurdle double last week at Hastings. Mr F. Armstrong informed me the other day that he had given instructions to have Shackle taken out of work, and the bay gelding is now enjoying a welldeserved rest. When the leaves begin to fall, Shackle will be given a course of instruction at the obstacle business. Evening, another of his string, will also be indulged in a holiday shortly at the termination of which she will be prepared for chasing contests.
