A really good story is told of a bookmaker, who, having been “ hit ” very hard, was in want of another “ thou.” to settle on the following Monday. Knowing his wife’s diamonds would easily realise that amount at “ uncle’s,” he accordingly “borrowed” them, and proceeded thither, when the following- dialogue took place “ 1 want you to lend me £lOOO on this suite ol diamonds. You can knock out the stones and replace them with imitation ones for a short time.” “ Very sorry, sir, but we did that for your good lady the other week !”
