GREY AND MENZIES.

On the 23rd ult., there was a vety representative gathering of thirty of the business men of Whangarei, assembled at the invitation of Messrs Grey and Menzies Ltd., to assist at the formal opening of their branch establishment in that town. It may be well here to state that this firm recenftly took over the business of Mr S. Hoey, of Kamo, and they were very happy in selecting a site for their manufactory so convenient to the railway station. The building, which is quite 60 feet long by 25 feet wide, is well lighted and airy, with the concrete floor, which is probably a necessity in such a business. The contractor was Mr Adams, of the Thames, who has carried out his work tO'the entire satisfaction of the proprietors. ( The whole of the plant was erected by Mr R. R. Menzies, under whose personal management this Whangarei business will be conducted. After inspecting the building and plant, the company very cordially drank the health of the firm. Mr Chas. Grey, in responding, thanked those present for the kind manner in which they had drank the firm’s health. He said that they had been impressed with the Whangarei district as a possible field of operations for some time, and although at present their business here might not be very extensive, they must not forget that both John Grey and Co. and Menzies commenced in a very small way in Auckland, and as time went on expansion followed. He had as much faith in the future of Whangarei as the people themselves had, and now that the members of Parliament elected for the- Auckland province were progressive, it was to be expected that they would do the best they could for Auckland as a whole, a part of the colony, which had been too long neglected. Although his company was starting in a' small way in Whangarei, they hoped at no distant date to put in a very much larger plant, but so far he was well satisfied with the prospects of business.

Mr Menzies also suitably replied. —(" Advocate.”)
