BOWLING

' The Pennant teams to represent the Auckland Club comprise the following well-known players : — Mennie, Brooke, James, Ledingham (skip) ; Thornes, Buttle, Garland, Dingle (skip).

The tournament, which will commence on Saturday, is arousing a lot of interest among bowlers: Each club is putting its strongest teams into the Pennant competition, and the games should be very close. I should not be surprised to find Newmarket and Mount. Eden at the top of the list at the finish.

The final for the Auckland Club Championship was played last Thursday between Messrs' Dingle and Oliphant. In the first game Dingle ran right away from his opponent, and won in the hollowest fashion possible. In the second game Oliphant pulled himself together, and starting off on the first head with four to his credit maintained the lead throughout, winning by three points. The final was completed in the dusk, and should have been postponed. Dingle, who played throughout in good form, won comfortably, and thus took the Championship.

The following will represent Ponsonby at the tournament John Becroft, T. Brown, R. Ballantyne, J. Veale, T. Watson,. J. Buchanan, J. Newell, A. Littler.

The Remuera Club will put the following teams into the field for the Easter tournament : —Caldwell, Maxfield, R. Hull, and D. E. Clerk (skip) ; Lennox, Perrin, G. Court, and Laxon (strip).

Mr Southwell, a London bowler, was present at the Auckland green on Saturday, and took part in one of the games.

A team of first year’s players from Mt. Eden played a team of similar standing of the Auckland Club, on the latter’s ground on Saturday. The green was rather heavy, which seemed to handicap the visitors more than the local men, the latter winning 'by nine points. A large number of other games were also played.

Cooper and Haselden have won the Championship Pairs of the Rooky Nook Club. '< '■ '.7

Newmarket and Onehunga played an inter-club match on Saturday, the former, however, not putting their very strongest teams into the field. At Onehunga the Newmarket three rinks won by the small margin of three points, but curiously ertough on the home green Newmarket were defeated by six points, Onehunga thus winning the match by ninety-five points to ninety-two.

At the Auckland bowling green on Saturday, & presentation was made to Mr A. M. Myers, the President of the Club, prior to his departure 'for England. Mr W. Lambert, who made the presentation, in the course of a very neat speech wished the traveller a very pleasant trip to the Old Country and a speedy return, when he was convinced that nowhere would he receive a more hearty welcome than at the hands of his fellow members of th® Auckland Bowling Club. Mr Myers mad® a feeling reply, in which he referred to the long list of previous presidents who had preceded him during the forty years the club had been in existence, and also cordially thanked those present for th® good wishes extended to his mother and himself.
