An inter-club match of six rinks a-side was played at Newmarket on Saturday, between the Auckland and Newmarket Clubs. The. latter proved victorious all along the line, and finished up with the big majority of forty-nine points. Many of the Auckland players seemed quite at sea, and played much below form, but as the Newmarket Club was handicapped by having to play new men to fill- the six rinks, they deserve every credit far their success over a club which has so many more members to draw from. « *\ • It was a happy though of Mr Cottle’s, the President of the'Newmarket Club, to i include teams of first season’s players, for every encouragement should be given to young players, and this is one of the secrets of the Newmarket Club’s success. Unfortunately, this good rule is not always followed by other clubs, the Auckland Club being the worst offenders in this respect. If the older players in this club were to adopt less selfish methods; it would stand in a higher position than it does at present. At Newmarket, for instance, a first season’s player is included in each team, this even being the case with the quartette which did so well at the New Zealand Championships. As a natural consequence, their younger players have made great strides in their all-round knowledge of the game, and have this season an unbeaten record. * * » » An inter-club match of six rinks was played on Saturday between the Mount Eden and Devonport Clubs. It was chiefly remarkable for the even scoring on both sides. At Devonport, the local team finished up ten points to the good, while at Mount Eden the total was exactly level. The Seasiders accordingly won by a narrow margin. -•• . ♦ •The return, inter-club match between the Ponsonby and Onehunga Clubs took place pn the Ponsonby green.
