CONSCIENCES NOT ALLOWED.
- .Not. tery long ago the Dunedin Presbytety held a meeting, at which the Rev'. Sutherland-reconimend ministers to preach appropriate sermons-last Sunday, the 2.3i‘d hist., being the . Sunday before the : taking of the local option roll, and to L'further strongly urge upon the people of thw Church to vote no-license only. However there werela few at the meeting who . : evideiitlv thought that every human being I. has the right to follow the dictates of his iy-or her own conscience, for. we find that the ■ Rev Borrie moved as an amendment that Ijfor the' latter portion of the motion be ' substituted ilia. following And urge
upon members to vote according to their consciences." ...This reasonable amendment only received support from four members, consequently the motion was' carried. It would be interesting to know the raai.)dcj as they have placed themselves in the unique position of practically declaring that they believe their congregations or parishioners have no consciences, and do not possess the dictates of common sense which allow’ them .to vote as they feel actuated, but must be strongly urged to vote for noliccn.se only. The motion as carried in the face of the amendment does hot say much' for its supporters, and still less fof the people composing their congregations.
