Christchurch, November IS. The Elderslie yearlings were sold by auction at Tattersall’s on Thursday last.- Buyers were plentiful, and bidding was spirited throughout. The principal lots sold were the chestnut colt by Stepniak; dam bv Fitz Donovan —lolan- ■ the Mr R. T. Turnbull,. 360 guineas ;

Stead ; a brown colt by Stepniak—Seashell, 180 guineas, Mr R. T. Turnbull ; ; a bay colt by Stepniak—Modder, 17<>i guineas, Mr G. G. Stead ; a chestnut i colt by Stepniak—Cobweb, 130 guineas, ' Mr J. Tennant ; a bay colt by Stepniak —Lady’s Maid, 110 guineas, Mr W. J. Taggart ; a bay filly by Stepniak—Marlin, 100 guineas, Mr B. T. Bennett (Wanganui). rhe highest price obtained for i the Gipsy Grand yearlings were as I follows Bay filly, (jam Coronal, 60 guineas, Mr A. Boyle ; brown filly, dam Ambush, 50 guineas, Mr R. W. Patterson ; bay colt, dam Asperley, 6 guineas, Mr W. Rathbbne. The Elderslie sire Stepniak came out on top among the successful sires at the Cup Meeting. His stock won £1895 in stakes, the winners being Orloff, Vladimir and King Log. Scylla, Petrovna, Stepdancer and Sychem won place money. Cuirassier, thanks to Halberdier’s success in the Cup, came second with £1220, Medallion third £lll5, then came Hotchkiss £745, Bill of Portland £620, Castor £5BO, • St. Clair £565, St. Leger £475, Perkin Warbeck 11. £440, Lord Rosslyn £3BO. Among the winning jockeys C. Jenkins was first with six wins, L. Hewitt second with five, J. McCombe third with three, while J. Quinlan, F. Davis and S. Smith each rode two winners. . Glenaladale had bad luck to strike himself in the Cup, and was therefore deprived of starting in subsequent handicaps. A Christchurch syndicate drew Abundance in one of Tattersall’s sweeps on the Melbourne Cup, and they netted £1125. It is reported that Tortulla will visit Stepniak this season. The late Mi Henry. Mace’s trotting stock were sold at the Brooklyn Stud Farm yesterday. Buyers were present from Australia and all parts of New Zealand. The sale was the most important of its* kind held in New Zealand, as forty-seven horses were sold, the sum realised amounting to £2440 14s 6d. The highest price obtained was for the stallion Almont, by Rothschild—Puella Mr C. C. Barber securing him for 6.10. guineas. Mr Barber, who came from Melbourne specially for the sale, also bought Almont’s dam, Puella, securing her for 90 guineas. The mare has a filly foal by Electioneer. Mr Tye, of Melbourne, bought Almont’s two-year-old-brother for 400 guineas, which is the highest price realised for a two-year-old trotting horse in the colony. Mr Gabriel, of Sydney, paid 35 guineas for a two-year-old colt by Almont—Lady Thorpe. Almont Pilot, by Almontp-Mes-senger Lass was sold for 60 guineas, Mr Tye, of Melbourne,, securing him. Brood mares brought up to 90 guineas. Good prices were obtained for horses in training, and the .fillies and colts by Almont Rothschild. Quite a* large number of horses left for Wellington on Monday night. Halberdier, Oingo, Fleka, Achilles, Ghoorka, Exmoor, Ora, Somerled, Cannie Chiel, Windwhistle, Westguard, Porirua, and four vearlings were among the number.
