Brakpan was the first away from a good start, and led up the straight from Rienzi, Progredior, Vanity Fair and Oakwood. Leaving the straight Brakpan was four lengths ahead of Rienzi, Strata Florida, Progredior, Lieutenant Bill, Sojourner following. Down the back st etch Seaport and Lieutenant Bill joined the leader, and were on terms at the five-furlong post, but in another furlong Sojourner and Lieutenant Bill took command, being joined at the turn for home by Patronus and Vanity Fair, Brakpan dropping back beaten. At the distance Vanity Fair deposed Lieutenant Bill, and looked like winning, when Lewis brought The Victory up on the outside with a great dash, and an exciting finish ended in favour of The Victory by a neck, Abundar ce coming late and getting third from Abrasia, then came Air Motor, Lieutenant Bill and Sojourner, the absolute last being Brakpan. Time, 3min 29sec. Merton Steel fell.
