AUCKLAND R.C. SPRING MEETING

FIRST DAY. (Selections by " The Judge.’') The Auckland Racing Club will ring up the curtain for the season on Saturday at Ellerslie, and make a commencement, with the Spring Meeting. There seems, a possibility that the long spell of bad weather we have experienced has at last broken, and if such is the case and line days are experienced then there is every reason to assume that the coming reunion will prove J- even more successful than the many which have preceded it, which indeed is saying a great deal. The course at present is m • capital order, while the lawns present a very pretty picture, • being at their very greenest stage. The flower beds especially are a mass of beautiful., blooms. Every- ’ thing that can be done to make the meet•’ing a pleasant one has been carried out • under the supervision of Mr Percival, the popular secretary, and all the arrangc"ments that long experience can dictate have been duly attended to. The railway authorities'advertise in this issue a very complete service of trains, and there will also be a number of ’buses running to the course. The catering is once again in the hands of Mr\ King, which is . a sufficient guarantee that the luncheon will be pro- ■ perly done. In fact, nothing remains but a little, attention on the part of Old Sol to insure a really enjoyable day’s outing. The first race to come up for decision is' the President’s Handicap, in which eleven horses are engaged. La Valiere and Romeo should have a good deal to say in this event. The Great Northern Guiiieas is next on the list, and in this sevenseen names yet remain, so that it is probable the scratching pen will; be somewhat freely used. The two .that to my mind will require the most beating are Wairiki and Idas, and J shall expect to see them catch Mr Lusk’s > eve in that order. There are fifteen engaged , in the Welcome Stakes, so that it seems likely there will be. a very fair field of youngsters to face Mr O’Connor, more especially, as nothing appears to stand out as extra gone: The dividend earners will very likely be found to be Kamo and Alba Rose. Thirteen remain in the Handicap Hurdles, which promises to be a very interesting race. On previous form Mars appears to be well treated, and I expect to see him win from Cannongate and Dingo. The Shorts Handicap will take some picking, although the field of sixteen will be considerable reduced, as many of those entered are also engaged in the classic and Other races. If sent to the post I like, the chances' of Austerlitz and St. Olga best. The City Handicap looks like providing material for a finish which may tax the judge’s powers to their utmost. Rosella is such a clinking good mare over this distance that I must take her to win, while danger is likely to threaten from Highlander and Tresham. Ten are down to compete, in the Pony Handicap, and in naming Annoyed, Gir-ton-Girl, and Orange and Blue I may have found the place getters. The first day’s racing will terminate with the Flying Handicap. Good as Hohoro is, I fancy list 71b a little beyond his power to carry successfully, and I. would rather rely on Mechanic, St. Olga, and Maroon and Gold to be the first three to finish. The full programme for the opening day . is as follows :— Psesidbnt’s Handicap of 100 so vs. One mile.

The races will, be continued on Monday, November 10, and Weene-day, November 12 Nominations for all evicts appear in another column.
