HAWKE’S BAY

Napier, August 12. Tropper E. Gillin, .who used to be well known in the world of sport as a horseman, and trainer, returned to Hastings from South Africa last, night. Gillin went to the scene of action with the Seventh Contingent, afterwards joining the Eighth. The. three-year-old half brother to Scallywag, by Sou'-wes ter, has been purchased bv Mr Pilcher, of M’aipawa, who has Scallywag under lease. Local punters went all to pieces in their selections over the Grand National Steeplechase and Winter Cup. Neither of the winners of these races were backed locally. Tortulla's dam. Honeysuckle, has proved unfruitful this season. When I saw the old dam last this year she gave the idea that her time on this sphere was very limited. At the annual meeting of the Napier Park Racing Club held to-day the following new niembers were elected : Messrs R. Perry. G. Leitch, J. D. Fischer. E. C. Lonir. and H. Peacock. For the live vacancies on the committee six gentlemen were nominated. A bail|o'4 ( * rjesul,t'e<i | in.' the- elect ion of Messrs H. Abbott, F. Bee, Joseph Bicknell. H. I). Holder, and R. D. Sweetapple. Mr Bee is the new member of the executive, the <>ther tjentlemon ejected having held office last season. Inspan is still on the invalid list, a thorn that he ran into one of his knees some couple of weeks back being the cause of the mischief. There is a good looking’ two-year-old filly by 'l’he Officer out of Norseman! running in a paddock at Taradale. She is the property of a local sport, who purchased her when the Hon.J. I). Ormond sent up some of his young stock for. sale last March. Her owner, intends to give her plenty of time, and I should not be surprised at her turning out a more than serviceable one when the time arrives for her to sport silk'.
