A case of plague in a leading hotel in Brisbane has been reported. Mr Alex Cowan takes over the Kamo Hotel, Kamo, from Mr D. Holland. Mr C H Dodge’s Prince of Wales Hotel, Hobson-street, is being repainted and renovated.

The Hon C. Louisson of Christchurch is at present on a visit to London.

Copper coins of 1901 with the Queen’s head,\ are being preserved as souvenirs. From the Ist of April last, the export tax on tobacco exported from Cuba was abolished, Mr F. G. Baynes, son of Mr Audus Baynes, has taken over the Ponsonby Club Hotel from Mr S. W. Buck.

Mr and Mrs Kidd of the Commercial Hotel, are making an extended trip South. They are due back this week.

I trust that our old friend, the genial S.W. from the Ponsonby Club, will soon be in possession of another hotel

Mr James Barrett of Paeroa will apply for the issue of a new license at Waihi, at the next sitting of the Ohinemuri Licensing Bench. A gazette extraordinary has been issued, summoning Pariament to meet for the despatch of business on July Ist. The “ Southland News ” states that a Southland hotelkeeper in a country township has cleared £40.00 in the last three years, and that on a recent Saturday £5O was taken, Mr Fred Saul, who is very well known and popular in the Trade, succeeds Mr J, C. Porter as town representative for Messrs Seegner Laugguth and Co.

Buchanan’s Whisky was the only brand shipped on board the Boyal yacht Ophir. One hundred cases were shipped on board on Ist March.

William Norton, of Gumtown, will apply for a publican’s license at the next meeting of the Thames Licensing Bench.

In Cuba the soil most suitable to the cultivation of the tobaccs plant, is a light soil with a silicate base, and vegetable matter in its surface.

In France and Italy the great tobacco and cigar factories have acquired quite a number of automobiles, not only as a useful and practical way of delivering their goods to consumers, but they are also an excellent advertising medium. The most popular signal given at the command of the Duke of York from the Ophir to the escorting cruisers, was one which gave notice that the Duke observed that the mam brace on the various vessels required splicing.

The Government have decided to treat alcoholism as a disease, and to provide wards in all the large centres of the colony where suitable medical care can be given to sufferers from over indulgence. An application for the transfer of the license of the Fitzroy Hotel in Wakefield Street to the premises now used as a boarding house called “ Glenalvon,” in Symonds Streetl will be applied for at the annual meeting of the City of Auckland Licensing Bench. It was mentioned in evidence on Friday that two plain-clothes constables entered a publichouse in Leith and ordered a customer to march up and down the floor of the bar six or seven times, in order to satisfy themselves whether or not that customer was drunk. It seems to me that this sort of thing is likely to lead to breaches of the peace. Imagine how you would feel, gentle reader, if, while enjoying your booze, a man was to ask you to walk along a chaflpdine. You would probably hit him on the nose, wouldn’t you?—that is, if he was a smaller man than you. At least, I think I would.—“ Glasgow Weekly Herald.”

Tobacco is a native of America. According to authentic reports, it was known to the Spaniards who first landed on the island of Cuba in 1492. They gave it the name of “Tabaco,” after the pipe in which the native Indians smoked the plant. The Criterion Hotel, Napier, is now under the proprietorship of Mr S Charlton, who was wellknown at Hastings in connection with the Bailway Hotel. The Criterion has been thoroughly renovated and refurnished, and now provides first-class accommodation for tourists, families, and commercial travellers.
