At tbe Christchurch Magistrate’s Court, last week, three alleged bookmakers, Sydney Nettleford, Thomas Hulligan and John Hyams, were charged with trespassing upon the New Brighton racecourse, during the Trotting Club’s meeting on March 16 and 21. The evidence of the club’s detectives was that two of the men had been warned cff the course and had afterwards returned, and the third had flatly refused to leave. The two gave evidence directly contradicting that of the detectives, and in Nettleford’s case this was supported by a witness, with the result that the Magistrate, Mr Beetham, adjourned the 'case till April 30, hinting that there was perjury somewhere. Hulligan was fined £5, and Hyams 40s. His Worship expressed his determination to put down totalisator betting with a firm hand.

A race for a £lO,OOO purse, made up of £2OOO a corner and £4OOO added by Thomas W. Lawson, between Charlie Herr, Oresoeus and Boralma was announced by Lawson, from Boston, on March 22. A statement says that the race will be held at Readville, Mass., in the week beginning Sept. 16, all the gate receipts lo go to charity. The race will be handled by the New Engjand Trotting Horse Breeders’ Association. Lawson said that as soon as the proposed race with The Abbott was called off he proceeded to Arrange a triangular race, doing it before he knew that The Abbott’s owner had changed his mind. The arrangements were immediately completed between the owners of Oresoeus, Charlie Herr and Boralma. The race is to be tbe best three in five beats, the first horse to take £6OOO,

the second £4OOO, each owner to deposit £5OO, and the remainder before the night of the race. The South Wairarapa Charitable Trotting Club will hold a meeting on the Moroa racecourse, Greytown, on Victoria Day, Friday, 24th May. The sum of £143 being offered in stakes for a programme af seven events. Nominations for which close on Saturday. Mr Alexander Robertson has covered his namesake’s deposit of £lOO for a match between his trotter Digitalis and Mr John Robertson’s Osterley.
