WELLINGTON RACING CLUB’S MEETING.

April 25 and 27. (By Our Resident Correspondent.) The Wellington Racing Club’s Meeting opens on Thursday, and concludes on Saturday >he acceptances received for the events to be decided are not nearly so good a. I expected, a fact which it is not easy to account for. No fewer than eighteen were knocked out of the Thompson Handicap, including Battleaxe, Pampero, Tortulla, Beddington, Cameo and The Shannon, leaving in a field of eleven, which, I think, was the number of starters last year; but one or two of this year’s batch may be scratched on the day. A number of those who didn’t pay up for the Thompson figure in the Waiwetu Handicap of seven furlongs —- Battleaxe, Cameo, The Hempie, Sundial and Westguard. All the top weights for the Welter have disappeared, leaving in a field of six, and the first five in the Railway Handicap have also been eliminated by their owners. Four are left in the North island Challenge Stakes, and three in the New Zealand St. Leger, Sir George Clifford being represented by two in both races. Thompson Handicap, one mile

When the weights for the Thompson Handicap were scanned the cognoscenti averred that Pampero had plenty to carry in Bst 121 b, but that he had earned every ounce of it, and on paper he possessed an excellent winning chance. It was on that account probably that a number of owners declined their engagements in the race. Before he left for Sydney, however, the Hon. George McLean, owner of the colt, gave orders that after the Canterbury Easter Meeting Pampero was to be spelled until next spring, and not sent to Wellington. This was not generally known, though, and there would like y have been a better field if it bad. Boreas will have to be at his very best to score with 9st 91b ; he is giving away a lot of weight to some very speedy animals, and it is very questionable if he can do it. Rosella has a taking appearance with Bst 71b, and must run well; she should prove too good for her mark-companion Crusoe, who, it may be mentioned, is very well just now. Okoari has twice run into a place in this event, ana may win this time with Bst 61b, but Palaver is receiving eight pounds from her, and the latter

who was my first choice on issue of the handicaps, will be the hardest nut in the field to crack. Melwood will carry a lot of local money, and on paper would appear to have a rosier show than Sylvia Park. Fashion is expected to shape a great deal better than he did at Feilding, and if the Southerner Skobeleff gets a place, well it will be his usual performance. He bas been racing with execrable luck. Glenaladale does not commend himself as a likely winner, but Amoureux has an undoubted show if she is a» well as when she romped home two years ago. My final selection is Palaver ... 1 Rosella 2 Amoureux 3

Battleaxe would not appear to have very much the best of things with the big impost. of 10st in the Waiwetu Handicap; he is conceding as much as 2st 111 b to the bottom weight, Waterford. Oameo will probably have been sent up from the South ere you receive these lines This horse raced well at the Canterbury Easter Meeting, but isn’t over brilliant; and the pick of the bunch engaged is, I think, Ostiak. It is time Ngaparu won a race for Mr Smith ; she may show up at this meeting. The result may be Ostiak 1 NGAFARU 2 The Hbmpie ... ... ... 3 Maiden Hack Race, six furlongs. Fair Dormant Bose Maiden Steelgun Benefactor The Waif Shrapnel Tanquid Tamati Rosewater Takio White Heather Durable Waitio Bonne Esperance Leinster Lass Forward Guard Silver Spray The Maiden Hack Race contains a number of unknown quantities. There are eighteen entered altogether, and the event should provoke a considerable amount of machine speculation. My choice is Benefactor 1 Bonne Esperance 2 White Heather ... ... 3 First Hurdle Handicap, about one mile and threequarters. st lb st lb Long Tom 11 13 Kohunui 9 12 The Guard ■ 11 11 Sylvanus 910 Waiwera 11 8 Bight Metal 9 7 Vanquish ... ... 10 0 Sudor ... ... ... 9 5 The Artillery horse Long Tom will have a host of admirers for the First Hurdles after his recent performances down South, but list 131 b is a heavy impost, and there are one or two others who look a better investment at the weights. The Guard isn’t likely to prove dangerous with list 111 b, and Waiwera with three pounds less hasn’t very much to be thankful for, but Vanquish on the 10st mark may prove to be worth following. Kohonui is a clean jumper, and possesses a fair amount of pace, but Sylvanus doesn’t appear to be as reliable as he should* I am informed, however, that Inisthona’s son wasn’t himself at Feilding, and tha* he will probably show different form at the Hutt. Right Metal won both races a Nelson the-'other duy, but he had only Rhoderick Dhu—a very indifferent opponent to beat. Sudor may prove u better investment among the light-weights. My selection is— Sylvanus 1 Long Tom ... ... ... 2 Vanquish • 3 Welteb Handicap, one mile and a furlong. st lb st lb 9H Lady Bell ... ... 810 Ostiak ... ... 9 11 Dartmoor 8 7 The Hemnie 9 10 Conspirer 8 7 The Porirua horse Ostiak will likely be given a second run in the Welter Handicap, in which he is on the same mark as Volley, with 9st lUb. I don’t think there is much difference between the pair ; the mare is invariably hard to beat in. her class, and she is in winning vein just now. I do not care for The Hempie, and Lady Bell, if brought down will (as at Feilding) find the top, horse too good for her. Dartmoor has a very handy weight in Bst 7ib, and may be expected to go near winning He isn’t meeting the company that he met at Auckland recently, and following him may turn out remunerative. I have no faith in Conspirer for this journey. The first three may be — Dartmoor ... ... ... 1 Ostiak .:. ... ... ... 2 Volley... ... ... ... 3 North Island Challenge Stakes, seven furlongs. Glenoede Somerled Nonette Menschikoff Mr Stead has won the North Island Challenge Stakes on each occasion it has been raced for, with Screw Gun and Formosan respectively, and this year he is represented by the Stepniak colt, Menschikoff, who meets the Auckland crack, Nonette, for the first ti e I think the race will lie between this pair, but both will have to carry penalties incurred through prior victories this season Glenogle and Somerled carry Sir George Clifford’s colours, but on paper neither appears to have much chance of scoring. My vote is Menschikoff ... * ... ... 1 Nonette ... ... ... 2 Glenogle ... ... ... 3 First Hack Handicap, one mile.

Mongonui has declined her engagement in the First Hack Handicap, which should furnish a.

flood race. There are seven other defections, but a field of sixteen remains in, and the ultimate ‘ winner is hard to locate The result may be Bonne Ksperance ... ... 1 Rosbplot ... ... ••• 2 Blaokwing ••• 3 Railway Handicap three-quarters of a mile. st lb 8t lb The Shannon ... 8 11 , I 1 2 Glenogle 8 6 West Guard Sedgebrook 8 0 Sentry 7 0 , Sundial 7 13 Osborne 7 0 The last event on the card is the Railway Handicap, in which The Shannon heads the list with Bst 111 b, but she appears to have gone oft lately and may not strip fit. If Glenogle is started he should show a bold front, although a runner in the Challenge Stakes an hour previously. There is nothing shining out promi- ‘ nently among the rest, but it’s time Sentry scored for his owner. Igo for Gleitogle ! Sentry Sedgebrook 3 • Nbw Zealand St. Legeb Stakes, one mile and threequarters. Chiel Somerled Beddington The New Zealand St Leger is to be determined ■on the second day and ought to go to Beddington. '
