Says “ Sprinter ” in the “ Canterbury Times —“ Many months back a Wanganui runner, M. Ryan, applied for re-instatement as an amateur ‘(writes our Wanganui correspondent). The local club heard nothing from headquarters, and apparently came to the conclusion that the powers that be hsd all either volunteered for South Africa, fallen into a Rip Van Winkle-like sleep, or perhaps developed that ‘tired’ feeling and couldn’t be bothered. Anyway, Byan was allowed to start with the amatures at the Wanganui Caledonian Society’s meeting and was placed in several events. Meanwhile, the Association held a meeting, and Ryan’s application was refused,, consequently all the competitors in the amateur events on January 22 are now professionals. The Association’s subsequent action will be interesting, almost as much so as the local amateurs’ criticisms on the Asso--ciation’s method of conducting its affairs.

THE A.A A. AND CYCLE CLUB’S AUTUMN MEETING.

The Auckland Amateur Athletic Club held their Autumn Carnival on Saturday afternoon last on the Domain Cricket Ground under favourable circumstances. The attendance was only fair, this being accounted for on account of the Auckland Annual Regatta and the Oddfellows* Premier Picnic being held on the same day. The ground was in splendid order, and the Secretary, Mr Ohlson, and the other officials worked hard to make the function a success. The Club’s Victor Ludorum was won by James Campbell, who won the 120yds Hurdles, and the 440yds Handicap, and also ran a third. The results of the various events were as under : — lOOYds Flat Handicap. F. Barton ... ... ... ... ... 1 H. G. Thomson, 44yds ... ... ... 2 P. P. Myles, 3|yds 3 First heat: B. D. Campbell, syds. 1; A. G, Fookes, 31-yds, 2; H. D. Thomson (Wellignton), syds, 3. Time, 10 3-ssec. A great finish, a matter of inches only separating the men. Second heat: F. Barton, 7yds, 1 ; P. P. Myles, 34yds, 2; A. E. Stych, Byde, 3. Time 10 l-sseo. Barton ran strongly and won by a yard. Third heat: H. G. Thomson, 44yds, 1; H. G. Bell, syds, 2; J E Leydon, 3yds, 3; Time, 102-ssec. Thomson came with a determined run in the last 40yds, and just won by inches from Bell. Final: Barton, who did not get away quite as well as in his heat, just succeeded in beating H. G Thomson after a rare struggle over the last 30yds, both fighting it out gamely. Myles was well up third. Time, 10 l-ssec. Half-mile Flat Handicap. J. E. Leydon, 25yds ... ... 1 E. Williams, 35yds ... ... ... .... 2 H. A. D. Anderson, scratch ... ... , ... 3 There were nine starters. Cowan was in front half-way through the first lap, just clear of Williams and Fookes, and this was the order when the half distance had been completed. Oowan had shot his bolt shortly after they entered on the home Up, and Leydon, coming with a rattle, took charge at the back. Holding the field as he liked, he came away and won by a dozen yards from Williams who was nearly caught napping a few yards from the post, by Anderson, who was a foot away third. Time, 2min 3 2-ssec. 300Yds Flat Handicap (Ladies’ Bracelet). E. V. Fitzpatrick, 10yds ... ... 1 H. G. Thomson, ...6yds 2 Bun in two heats, first, second, and third in each beat in final First beat: J. Campbell, 4yds, 1; H. G. Thomson, 6yds, 2; F. Barton, 12yds, 3. Fitzpatrick? 10yds, 1; 8 H. Heald, scratch, 2; P. P. Myles, 6yds, 3. Time, 34sec. Fitzpatrick held the lead right through, winning rather easily from Heald, who ran a game race and just won by inches from Myles. In the final Thomson was within a yard and ahalf of Fitzpatrick at the Hospital bend, but the latter sticking gamely to his task came again and won by about a yard. Time, 33 2-sseo.
