HIGH PRICES FOR TROTTERS-

The Abbott, king of trotters, has made good W. B. Fasig’s prediction that a gelding would some day sell • for 25,000d0l at auction, aaya an American exchange. The champion has a new owner, and as a result 26,500d0l has been placed on the credit side of grand old Nettie King’s account in the Village Farm ledger. That The Abbot would bring any such figure was not the general thought. Quite a number of folks set the amount at 25,000db1, but the majority averaged around 20,000d01.‘ Although the fastest trotter we have ever seen, and still right in the prime of life; he must he called a well sold horse His earning capacity is practically nothing, for he can get no horse to race against, and the exhibition business will not pay training and shipping expenses. Only three other geldings have been »old for more money than The Abbot. The late Robert Bonner paid 36,000d0l for Rarus and 33,0 C Odol for Dexter. The other gelding who cost more money than the present champion was Prince Wilkes, who sold for 30,000d01, but all these were sold at private sale. Following is a list of trotters that have been sold for 20,000d0l or more at either private or auction sales.

Of the above-named horses a volume of histo y might be written. The high price geldings were all sold after their racing days were over. Arion, the record-breaker for all trotters, is still owned by the man, J. Malcolm Forbes, who gave a fortune for him. He was a most marvellous colt trotter we have ever seen. As a sire he has given Mr Forbes the satisfaction of having bred Nico, and his Master of Ponkapog has never regretted his purchase. Axtell has earned over 100,000dols, more than his cost since he was sold for six figures. At the recent New York sale he changed hands for 14,700d015. Director never earned a dollar over hie keep for A. H. Moore, and was sold for lees than 2000dols, within a half-dozen years of the time he cost 75,000d015. Anteeo did not prove a good investment, as bis owner soon became a financial wreck. A fire, which caused his death, made Bell Boy an expensive investment. Had he lived he would have

more than paid for himself. Stamboul was well sold at 50,000d015. Directum’s sale for 20,000 dollars, which occured two years ago, was the first big sale of the revival in horse values, and Mr W. E. Spiers will probably get all his money back in stud fees in a few years. Nancy Hanks, Maud S., Rarus, Dexter, and Sunol were bought because they were champions, and with no idea of ever realising interest on the money. In the above list the prize package for a noaceount horse is Athol, a brother to Arion, who brought 25,000d01s under the hammer during the boom days of the early nineties. Voodoo and Mascot are about a stand-off for the second leather medal.
