TARANAKI.

January 30. A Wellington writer mentions that upon the death of Hangfire, which occurred on pulling' up after the Foxton Cup was run, a post mortem showed that the horse’s inside was full of bot grubs, which had started to eat through the flesh. These pests were evidently the original cause of the horse’s death. There is no doubt but that a number of racehorses are affected by the scourge, and their unaccountable form at times is due to these grubs eating out the system. A person who could find out a medicine to drive the grubs out of the animal’s stomach would be conferring a lasting benefit, not only on the most intelligent and useful of our so-called dumb animals, but indirectly on mankind. Where this bot pest is going to end nobody seems to know. Dartmoor has incurred a 51b penalty for the First Hack race at Taranaki, which brings his weight up to Bst 121 b. The Minerva 11. case is at present quiet. It seems to be generally admitted that the Taranaki Club holds the key of the position. When the weights appeared for the Taranaki Cup Gipsy Queen was scratched for the Cup and Waylay for the Hack Hurdles. Tukapa competed at the recent Foxton Meeting, and was just wiped out on the second day in the Grandstand Handicap. He competed at the Pahiatua Meeting this week.
