HAWKE’S BAY.

THZ FOALINGS AT KARAMU—HAWKE’S BAT - ; HORSES AT WOODVILLE—RACING GOBSIPTH£ HAWKE’S BAY WEIGHTS. Napier, December 21. The last foaling took place at Karamu last week, when Legacy (St Leger--Yattacy) pro duced a colt to The Officer. The season’s crop ■ at this establishment consists of forty-seven foals. Of this number The Officer is responeibL for forty-one, twenty-four fillies and seventeen colts Spindrift claims four, a brace each of coifs and fillies. St Andrew’s contribution is a Couple of fillies. This is The Officer’s first term at stud life, and he has come out of the ordeal with great kudos, for out of the forty seven mares which consorted with him forty one of them have enriched the possessions of the squire of Karamu. His consorts consisted of a choice lot, as the following nameswill show: —tfnid, Lullaby, Spinnaker, Lyrebird, Film, Mount Ida, 801 l Call, Taibou, Lyre, Dryad, Thame, Miss Never, Oriflamme, Aphrodite, Nixie Oriental, Target, Montmarte, Content, Elflock, Miro, Sahara, biorsemaid, Maluri, Kimma, Industry, Montdread, Trentalto, Golf, Links, Legacy, Elf '•Ron, Spinnet, Dreadaette, Tiratu, Queen of " {trumps, Radiant, The Shrew, Lustrous, Spinney, ' Guitar, Arethusa, inadromene, Solitaire, Delft, Spot, Flattery. Spinfeldt’s companions were ■ Heartsease; Martyr, Bequest, Spruce, and Tomboy. St Andiew served Gabble, Hippona, ■ Queen of Hearts, Hippolyte, and Talkative. - Local horses were very successful at the Woodville Meeting, Amoureux and Bobin Gray each scoring a double, wh.le Murmur captured the '* big even of the meeting. The two latter are ! the property of Mr G. E. G. Richardson*, the <■' well-known Napier sport. Robin Gray’s success was all the more pleasing to his owner, as he is one of bis own breeding. He is by Robinson Crusoe from an unnamed daughter of Hiko and Jewzall. I his is his second public appearance, as he only started once last season in a twoyear old event at the Summer Meeting of the Napier Park Olub. It is hardly right to say .that he started, for directly the signal to go was given he got rid of his rider, Buchanan, and %made his way back to the saddling paddock. Robin Gray is only a pony, but he is evidently a good parcel wrapped up in small dimensions Murmur was bred by Mr G. Hunter at Porangahau. His sire is the Musket horse Wonderland and his dam is Whisper, the heroine of many a hard-fought struggle in bygone days Murmur was originally sold to W. Whittaker, the jockey, for a very small figure, who afterwards disposed of him to a syndicate who raced him under the .nom de course of Mr H M Weston, Mr Richardson buying him from the latter parties. ;. f , Amoureux, who was bred at the 1 emahanga stud, is a more than half-sister to Rosefeldt, the winner of the New Zealand Oup in 1893. She is .. owned and trained by R. Connop, of B astings, .-.whose luck has not been on the u > grade for some time past. He is a well conducted, deserving young fellow, and it is to be hoped that Dame Fortune will continue in a genial mood to ‘him. Philanthropist returned from Woodville tonight ; he looks the wo se for w?ar Amoureux, Passion Fruit, Daphne and Waitio arrive at Hastings to night from Woodville Murmur, Palaver, Robin Gray, Crown Prince and Donovan went on to Palmerston North from Woodville. They claim engagements there on Boxing and the following day. Ooeur de Lion, The Shannon, Oingo, Bushman, Kabuwai, Sinus and Selkirk leave Hastings for Palmerston North on Monday. Local backers had all the best of the argument ..with the books this week over the Woodville .fixture. Mr Henry issued his weights up to time for the Hawke’s Bay Summer Meeting. Those who look like.saving a chance are Nobility, Oingo, and Phooka in the New Year Handicap; Goyt and Eau de Vie in the First Hack; Mr Watts’ selected and Kahuwai in the Presidents’ Handi. cap; Apres and Destroyer in the Two-year-old ; First Shot and Moifa in the Hurdles; Selkirk, Prattle and Hiarooe in the Maiden ; Bonnie d’Eau and Ngaio in the Welter, and Autaia, Lady’s Link and Apollo in the Christmas Handicap.
