THE PONSONBY REGATTA.

The Ponsonby Annual Begatta was held on Saturday afternoon, under the most adverse circumstances, so far as the weather was concerned, a hard gale from north-east to north with heavy rain prevailing throughout the proceedings. The Northern Company’s finep.s. Wakatere was flagship, being moored well over to the northern shore, between Birkenhead and Northcote, and Captain A. Farquhar, his officers and crew did everythii g possible for the comfort of the visitors. Mr Walter Jones was starter and judge of the sailing races ; Mr R. Logan starter and umpire, and Messrs W. Somers and G. W. 8. Patterson, judges of the rowing races, and Mr M. A. Carr timekeeper Owing to the rough weather several of the smaller rowing races and some of the side shows had to be abandoned. The following are the details of the racing:— Open Handicap Yacht Bace. Entries and handicaps—Thelma scr, Ida 13min, Heartsease 14|min, Thetis 18min, Ladye Wilma 19min, Kotiri 23min, Aorere 23min. Course—From north side of flagship, round mark buoy off Kauri Point, thence round mark boat off Queenstreet Wharf, thence round mark boat south of O’Neill’s Point, back to mark boat off Queenstreet Wharf, thence round mark boat off Kauri Point (twice round), finishing north side of flagship. Thelma, Heartsease, Kotiri, and Aorere did not atart Thetis was away first, followed by Ladie Wilma, da being a ba 1 third. After a good race the finish was : Ida, 4hr 3min 42sec; Thetis, 4hr Bmin 18scc; Ladye Wilma, 4hr llmin 37sec. Thetis wins on time allowaice by 36sec, Ida being second. Bona Fide Cruisers’ Race (handicap). Course — Same as the first race. In this race, out of the 13 yachts entered, eight started. They were Mavis, Rarere, Spray, Mabel, Corinna, Oooee, Isfrael, and Tangaroa. The boats were got away well together The finishing times were : Oooee, 4hr 21min 48sec ; Spray, 4hr 26min 22sec ; and Mabel, 4hr 44min 13sec. Spray had to concede Cooee 2min, and Mabel 6min, so that the time allowance does not change the positions of the placed boats. Yachts, 24ft (linear rating). Entries—Matua, Maka Maile, Eulalie, Bona, Miro, Speedwell, Mahoe. Course Same as open handicap. Eulalie, Spetdwell, and Mahoe did not start. Maka Maile was the quickest away, and got a good start, Bona and Miro crossing the line together, whilst Matua was a very bad last. The first time round Miro got a long way ahead from Matua, working much better up to windward Maka Maiie and Bins gave up, leaving the two new boats to fight it out alone. Bound the course the second time. Miro improved her posi-

tion, and the finish was : Miro, 4hr 40min 55sec ; Matua, 4hr 48min lOsec. Patiki Class (sailed under rules of Parnell Sailing Club). Course —Same as No. 1 event, once round : Eka and Boomerang failed to put in an appearance, waich left Rambler and Kangaroo (scr) and Rita (2min) to face the starter. The boats were sent away to a nice start, Kangaroo having slightly the advantage. Passing|the flagship on the down journey Ramb:er and Rita were in a line, the former being well to windward, and Kangaroo, steering a course on the northern side of the flagship, followed third, Imin later. When the three again passed the flagship Rambler was a long way in front of Bita. The finishing times were : Rambler, 3hr 46min 30sec, 1 ; Rita, 3hr 57min, 2; Kangaro , 3hr 59min, 3. Yachts, 26ft or under and over 22ft overall, centreb ard and tuck stern (handicap). Course —Same as open handicap. Entries and handicaps —Flora, 26ft, scr ; Shamrock, 25ft 6in, scr : Konene, 24ft, B|min ; Sha crock, 26ft, 7%in; Waitangi, 23ft, 9amin ; Kotiro, 7imin ; Pastime, 24ft sin, Simin; Ofa, 24ft 7Jin; Italy, 23ft lOin, 71iu ; Cicely, 25ft 4in, scr. All the competitors were sent away to a good start, but on the first round several dropped out, the wind and sea being too much lor them. Cicely, Italy, and Ofa finally fought it out, the finish being Cicely, shr 6min 22 ec; Italy. shr Bmin Bsec ; Ofa, shr 14min 33iec. On time allowance Italy takes first place and Cicely second. Yachts, 22ft and under (handicap). Course, the same as for the patiki class : Waimoa, Antipas, Seahorse, and Buru were the only starters out of nine entries. Seahorse was late in crossing the line. Waimoa led right round the course, and finished at 4hr llmin llsec, followed by Seahorse at 4hr 12xin 47sec, and Ruru at 4hr 33min 2sec. tieahorse was allowed 2imin, and Ruru 9min from Waimoa, which was on the scratch mark, so that Seahorse takes the first prize, Waimoa second, and Buru third. Naval Cutters. Course —From flagship round mark in bay, thence round mark near flagship to starting place, once round. Entries and handicaps -Auckland IS aval Artillery, scr ; Devonport Naval Artillery, scr; No. 2 Service Company, P.M., smin ; Ponsonby Naval Artillery, 7min ; times at start. Ponsonby did not compete. After a gr at battle with the rough sea No. 2 Service Corps crew won by 3£min, Auckland second, Devonport closi up third. Men-o’-war Cdtters. Course, same as naval cutters Entries —-Mildura No. 1, Mildura No. 2, Abarenda. All were sent away fairly even. Abarenda fihally won by 2inin from Mildura No. 1, Mildura No. 2 being 3£min behind the second boat.
