The One Mile Handicap proved to be a v. ry hollow affair, J. K-an, 80 yards, winning by something like 90 yards. Piro-Piro and Farquabar, however, furnished, a good contest for second place The Maori got the verdict by about half a yard after a fine finish up the straight. Time, 4tnin 41sec A. R. Downer having intimated that he has decided to give up running, E C. Bredin has issued a challenge to run any man in the world 440yds for £lOO a side and the championship. The pedestrian events at the Auckland Cycling Club’s sports were well contested with the exception of the Mile Handicap which was a very hollow affair as far as the winner was concerned.

The Auckland Handicap vf three distances was the principal pedestrian event of the day. Each distance was run iu heats. The winners of the disfat ces were 100yds, 81. Fernley, beat Hindman by half a yard, Smith third. Time, lOsec. 200yds H. Fernley, 10yds, won by a yard from Smith, George third, lime, 20 4 ssec. 300yds.:—W*. G. Abbott, 10yds, beat H. M Smith, 24yds, and T. George, 17yds, was third. Time, 32 4-ssec. The result was thus H. Fernley 1, W. G. Abbott 2, and H. M. Smith 3. The Half Mile Handicap brought out a field of seven. The limit man, Turner, led by twenty yards at the end of the first lap, but when Farquhar closed up at the back stretch he cried enough. Farquhar came on into the straight and won comfortably from W. L. Dutton, 30yds, and Piro-Piro, scratch Time, 2min 5 l-ssec. In spite of the efforts made by the English A.A.A. to purify the sport some years ago, when Bredin and other well-known men had to throw m their lot with cash runners, everything is by no means as it should be in regard to betting and accepting expenses, etc; One of the champions, for instance, thinks nothing of asking for expenses when running at a meeting.

The management committee of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club met last Friday evening in the Sports’ Club Booms. Mr 0. E. McCormick presided. Mr Mahon wrote stating that he would be pleased to judge the walks. Mr W. B. Eyre was re-appointed handicapper to the Club. It was decided to place a 120 yards Invitation Scratch Hurdle Race on the programme. Mr J. Tizard, the Australian crack distance, runner was announced to be a competitor at the forthcoming meeting. Several new members were elected.

At Wishaw on September Ist, the Twentyfive Mile Amateur Championship of Scotland was decided, when J. Brownlee, East Stirlingshire 8.0., won by a yard, with W. N. O’Neill, Northern C. 0., second, and J. Miller, Greenhead C.C., close up third. Time, Ihr 15min 24 4-5 sec.

The New South Wales League of Wheelmen are going to celebrate the birth of the Australian Commonwealth, by holding a monster race meeting. The prize list as suggested by the secretary, Mr O’Brien, reaches £lOOO, and if the meeting is carried into effect it should prove a great success.
