FOOTBALL

On Saturday afternoon last, at Potter s Paddock, a match was played between a team representing, the Auckland Referees’ Association and the Auckland University team. There were about fifty spectators present, many of whom were ladies. Several old-time knights of the leather took part, amongst whom were M. Keefe, E. Gittos, F. J. Ohlsen and F. Murray. University won the toss, but the game had not progressed far before a high kick by the old fellows pat University in danger, and Ballin, who was following up fast, scored right under the posts. Murray, with his usual precision which used to please visitors to Potter’s a few seasons back, added the major points. It was not long after the kick-off, however, until ’Varsity, with a passing run, put the Refere.s’ line in danger, but a forward pass spoilt a good chance. Shortly after this, “ Doc ” Murray had to retire, having sustained an injury to one of his ribs. On resuming play, the knights of the whistle assumed the aggressive, and from a forward rush, Ballin managed to score his second try. The attempt at goal failed. ’Varsity now took a hand at the attack, and a fine passing run by their backs almost ended in a score Nothing daunted the old-timers retaliated, and Ohlsen, the centre-half, getting the ball away to Gittos, the latter managed to cross the line and score. The kick at goal failed, and half-time was called, much to the relief of the old-timers, who seemed considerably done after their efforts. The secor d spell was opened by an attack on the Referees’ territory by the ’Varsity team, who had the assistance of the wind during this half. After some loose play, ’Varsity got a free kick, and Mules kicked a fine goal. ’Varsity, from this out, attained the aggressive, but did not succeed in adding any further score to their credit The match resuted in a win for the men of football knowledge bv 11 points to 3. F. Ohlson, at cenvre-half, played the best game on the ground, and may yet compare with many 'Bl younger scrum half. He was particularly good in getting the ball away, and in using the blind side of the scrum. Most of the old-timers showed that they had not forgotten any of the points of the game. Amongst those who showed a good turn of speed on the field were P. Mackie and Hardingham. McSporran, Hunter and Beale were the best of the ’Varsity forwards, whilst Mules, Grey and Stuckey were the-pick of the backs. At Now Plymouth on Sept 27th the Tukapa juniors defeated the Palmerston North Institute team by 8 points (two goals from marks) to nil. Morey and Power kicked the goals, the latter’s' effort beihg from the half-way line. (Taranaki Correspondent).
