WELLINGTON RACING CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING.

The following report and balance-sheet were presented to the members at the annual general meeting, held on Monday : — THE REPORT. In submitting the accounts of receipts and expenditure for the year ending August 31, 1900, it is satisfactory to again repoit the continued prosperity of the Club. The stakes paid during the past season show an increase of abo.t £lOOO over the previous year, and notwithstanding the unfavourable weather which prevailed at the Autumn and Steeplechase Meetings, the results for the past twelve months must be considered satisfactory. The increased accommodation for the public, which, as mentioned in last year’s report, was urgently required, has to a large extent been provided, and has no doubt been appreciated by the Club’s patrons, and it is hoped that the incoming stewards may see their way to further add to the equipment of the racecourse. All the improvements effected during the past year have been carried out under the supervision of the Club’s caretaker, Mr E. O. White, and the stewards desire to record their satisfaction at the manner in which he has performed his

duties, more especially with regard to the new tea kiosk, which was erected entirely from Mr White’s own designs. The stewards have also to convey their thanks to Mr James Lockie, who at their request kindly inspected the several buildings while in course of construction. He reported at intervals in highly favourable terms of the satisfactory nature of the works. The expenditure required for the various improvements having exceeded the funds to the Club’s credit. The additional amount has been obtained, partly by cash advances by four stewards (£lOO each), and the balance by way of overdraft from the Club’s bankers, for which stewards have given their personal guarantee. The stewards have, as customary, issued the programme of the Spring Meeting, and now recommend that the Su nmer Meeting, 1901, be extended to a three-days’ gathering, and that the principal event on the additional day be known as the Port Nicholson Handicap, of 300 sovs, distance one mile. The present stewards are also of opinion that in future the stakes should be paid in full instead of less five per cent., as has been customary in the past. The training tracks are now receiving attention at the hands of the caretaker, who has also been instructed to proceed with the completion of the new grass gallop, and as these works are of an urgent nature, the stewards have every confidence in recommending them to the favurable consi eration of their successors.
