THE WANGANUI JOCKEY CIUB’S SPRING MEETINGThe first meeting of the season of one of the most popular racing clubs in the colony will take place on Tuesday and Thursday of next week, 'f he gatherings at Wanganui are always very popular both with racing folk and the general public. For the Meeting next week Mr Evett’s handicaps have attracted very good acceptances, and the fields for the various races promise to be large. The Wanganui Guineas should furnish a good race. Representatives from Auckland, Christchurch, and Hawke’s Bay will strive for supremacy, and therefore, the race will undoubtedly be full of interest. On his Avondale form Beddington would not appear to have much chance ; but good judges are of the opinion that if the race is run at a smart pace all through, the Seaton Delaval gelding will require a great amount of beating. Robin Adair ran second to Mellwood at Rangitikei, but was a bit short of work then. He showed some pace and plenty of pluck, and may be expected to run well if sent across to Wanganui. Renown has been little spoken about of late. As a two-year-old he promised to make a good three yearold. Nobility has been doing very well in his work lately, and if he is as good as he is said to be then he will show up well next Tuesday. Formosan, I think, has the best credentials for public favour. Nothing has gone wrong with him during the winter, though it has been rumoured that he makes a noise. Probably that affection will not trouble him over a mile, for one wants something better than mere rumour before discarding such a promising colt. Oannie Chiel was a good-looking customer as a two-year-old, and if he has fulfilled his promise he must be a very fine colt. Heiress, though a handsome filly, may not he quite class enough for some, of the colts. I shall anticipate the placings thus: —

Formosan ... ... ... 1 Cannie Chiel 2 Nobility 3 The Spring Handicap has sixteen acceptors. Boreas with 10st 71b is at the top. of the list. The Sou’-wester gelding has shown himself such a smasher, even under heavy weights, that if he be fit and well he must have a chance. Bluejacket has left for the scene of action. The race is not run over his best distance, but still, since the Avondale Meeting, he has put in some good work, and he may be expected to run fairly well. Bush Rose and Crusoe are weighted up to form. I like Rosella with Bat 61b very well, and if The Hempie has developed into a better mare as she was last season she should run well with 7st 111 b. Laetitia, Scottish Minstrel, and Lady Lome hardly compare well with some of those above them. Tirade with 7st 51b is fairly well treated. 1 think the placed horses will be Rosella 1 Bluejacket ... 2 The Hempie 3 For the other races I fancy the following :—-. Handicap Hurdles. Light 1 Cairo 2 Tui Flying Handicap. Lasting 1 Cora Linn 2 Hastings 3 Hack Hurdles. Kaiwhakaroa... ... ... 1 Frost 2 Kilkenny 3 Trial Hack Handicap. Tukapa... ... ... ••• 1 Bonus ... 2 Liable 3 Handicap Hack Race. Redoubt 1 Lubra ... 2 Taplow, ••• 3
