A NEW ZEALAND INDUSTRY

GLEN VAR WINE COMPANY, LIMITED.

The annual general meeting of thia company was held on Tuesday, the 21st inst, at the chamharH of ex-Judge H. G. Seth-Smith, chairman of directors, who presided. There was a fair attendance of shareholders present. The secretary (Captain A.. L. Harvey) read the minutes, which were confirmed. The chairman retired, but was re-elected a director. Mr W. Rattray was re-appointed auditor. The accounts .were laid upon the table, and passed as audited. The balance-sheet showed: —Dr: Liability on authorised capital, £lB6O 12s 6d; other liabilities, £2136 6s 2d; balance surplus, £324 12s 2d ; total, £4321 10s lOd. Cr: Stocks of wine, £3549 16s; plant, machinery, etc, £673 ss; other assets, £9B 9s lOd ; total, £4321 10s lOd. Memo : Deficiency on June 30, 1899, £136 5s 7d ; surplus, June 30, 1900, £324 12s 2d; actual profit during last 12 months, £460 17 9d. The meeting concluded with the usual votes of thanks. As showing the value of this New Zealand wine we have pleasure in quoting the following letter from Dr Bakewell: —“ 144, Hobson-street, July 4, 1900.- Dear Captain Harvey—l want another dozen of your Glen Var wines, I like the wine very much and it just suits me. All the varieties are light wines, and especially suitable for this climate. If the ladies would only drink a glass or two of Glen Var wine with their luncheon or dinner, instead of saturating t hemselves with poisonous tea, we should not have so many pale faces and weakly girls as we have here. I have recommended the wine “to many of my patients, but there is always the awkward obstacle that one cannot get less than a dozen of it. You ought to get a bottle license. I hope sincerely, for the sake of the health of the community, that your entt rprise may succeed. —I am, etc, R. H.
