RANGITIKEI POINT-TO-POINT STEEPLECHASE.

The living representation of the .central picture of the Chronicle Bangitikei Calendar was again to be seen in Broadway, on the occasion of the Point-to-Point Steeplechase. Fair fields started for most of the events, and the going was fast The course was from a point in the Makirikiri to Captain Johnston’s paddock at Bonny Glen. It was well selected from a spectator’s point of view, as the races could be seen nearly a mile from the winning post. In the Welter Bace the Turk disappointed his admirers by refusing six different jumps, thus putting him out of an otherwise easy win. In the Light Weights, Mystery, who otherwise had an easy victory, fell at the last jump. She was soon under way again, and ran second. The following are the results : — Heavy Weights: Mr P Wooton’s Rainbow (H. Wilson) 1, Mr Galpin’s The Turk (O. Jeffer-

son) 2, Mr L. M. Taverner’s Arina 3, Mr A. Strang’s Torrent 4. Light Weights : Mr P. Wooton’s Bosella (Wooton) 1, Mr F. Gibbons’ Mystery (J. Coombes) 2, Mr Dalrymple’s Venture (Dalrymple) 3, Mr Wilde’s Domino (Wilde) 4, Mr Baldwin’s Glenogie 5. Farmers’ Plate : Mr O. Jefferson’s Merry Boy (owner) 1, Mr J. McLean’s Mazique 2, Mr Bailey’s Paul Jones 3, Mr J. Death’s Oroftmore 4, Mr W. Boache’s Caloola 5. The best race of the day. Mr J. G. Wilson, in presenting the prizes to the respective winners, said he had very great pleasure indeed in handing to Mr P. Wooton, winner of both the heavy and light weights’ races, thfe beautiful silver trophy presented by Davenport Bros, of Marton, also the silver salver jug. A second prize of a plated inkstand fell to Edgar Galpin’s horse “The Turk,” his brother George accepting the gift on his brother’s behalf, who is serving his country in South Africa while we are enjoying ourselves in sporting. Mr O. Jefferson was presented by the Club with a silver cup as winner of the Farmers’ Plate on Merry Boy. Despite the cold, the attendance was large and the racing good.
