The general handicap race of yachts belonging to the Parnell Sailing Club, for Mr W. J agger's trophy, was sailed last Saturday afternoon. Mr Jagger’s yacht, Thelma, acted as fligship. Mr F. W. Coombes officiated as judge and timekeeper, and Mr J. Ronayne as starter. Entries and handicaps : Rainbow scr, Ida lOmin, Aorere 16min, Corinna 22min, Pastime 31min, Myra 33min, Melissa 38min, Waitangi 38min, Kotiro 38min Eka 41min, Rambler 41|min, Welcome Jack 44min, Zoe 44miu, Rita 44min, Bronzewing 44min, Anita 46min, Merlin 53min. The course was from flagship off Judge’s Bay, round mark off Hobson’s Bay, out to buoy in Rangitoto Channel, back again to mark at Queen Street Wharf, finishing south side of flagship, twice round. The yachts were sent away to a good start, Eka being first to move, closely followed by Welcome Jack and Myra. Rainbow was first to round the Hobson Bay mark, with Ida next. On the beat out to the channel Rainbow increased her lead, and on the run up the harbour to Queen Street Wharf led Ida by 3£tnin, the latter being followed by Aorere. Off Brick Bay Aorere carried away her topmast, but she eo.i-, tinned the race Very little change took place on the second round, except that the smaller fry were left more hopelessly behind, and the boats finished as follows : Rainbow, shr lOmin 30sec ; Ida, shr 16min 30sec; Aorere, shr 24min sOseo ; Corinna, shr 42min 20sec; Pastime, 6hr 2min 55sec; Waitangi, 6hr 3min s»ec. On time allowance Ida takes first plt.ee, Aorere second, and Rainbow third. Logan Bros have received orders from Sydney to build two yachts of the 30-footer class. They are to be ready next spring, their sails being English made. It appears that although we can build boats in Auckland we can’t make sails. Why is this ? The North Shore Sailing Club general handicap lor the “Dunning Cup,” which was postponed from last Saturday, will be sailed next Saturday afternoon ; elso the Patiki race for Mr Murdoch’s trophy.

The Northern Rowing Union is holding a rowing regatta at Lake Takapuna on Saturday afternoon, and judging from the entries received, there will be good fields for all the races. The Ladies’ Pair oar Race has brought out seven crews, including one from Ngaruawahia The Marshall Sculls will also be rowed at this meeting, and with the five gig races, in which all the local rowing clubs are represented, there will be no lack of events. Given a fine day, the function should be an attractive and pleasant outing. Ferry steamers leave Auckland at 10 o’clock and 1.80 p m. The fourth race of the season in connection with the Manakau Yacht Club was sailed on Saturday afternoon. This race was the first to count for the Challenge Cup, the first boat soring 12 points, the second boat 9 points, the third boat 7 points, and 1 point less to each following boat. The race, which was keenly contested throughout, resulted as follows : —lndustry (16min) 1, Mascotte (9min) 2, Belle (scr) 3. The second race will be sailed on Saturday next, and the third on March 24. Another match was sailed between J. Donald’s Bell Bird and Stephenson and Prater’s Alma, for a stake of £5 a side, on Saturday afternoon last. The North Shore boat again won rather easily, finishing 4niin 40sec ahead of Bell Bird. The loser is a good little boat of her class, but she is clinker built, and her only chance against her longer, carvel-built rival would be in a stiff westerly breeze.
