OTAHUHU TROTTING CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING.

[by

PETRONEL.]

Everything points to a most successful gathering for the Summer Meeting of the Otahuhu Club, which commences on Saturday and will be

continued on Wednesday, and concludes on the following Saturday, February 24. The fields for the first day promise to be large, for Mr Knight’s handicaps have attracted capital acceptances. Racing will start with the Maiden Trot, for which there are nineteen acceptors. It is a bit of an undertaking to select the winner from such a crowd, but perhaps the finish will be Viscount, Black Bess, and Popinjay. Fourteen ponies are left in the Maiden Pony Handicap, and many of them are strangers within the gates of Potter’s Paddock. The topweight (Creel) is fancied in some quarters, and Moetae is also favourably regarded. The result may be a close one, and I shall expect to see Moetae, Queen Quail, and Little Jim well forward. The principal race of the day—the Otahuhu Trotting Cup—shows thirteen acceptors, and ten at least should go to the post. Royana has not previously exhibited her paces at Potter’s Pad- ; dock, but she has shown winning form when leniently handicapped in the South, and she will probably be well up at the finish of the race on Saturday. Hird should be dangerous with the beet of hie two, and I like Patron’s chance if he - is well. Probably the finish will be fought out b y Patron, Bird’s Elect, and Royana. The Hurdle Race appears likely to furnish a • good race between Brooklet, Nellie, and Hinemoa. ’ . t. ; Fourteen trotters are left in the Harness Trot,. and of these Hird’s Choice, Lord Harold, and Vola Clair should be about at the finish. , - f For the Suburban Pony Handicap I like Lady Howitztr, Noba, and First Whisper. The Electric Trot Handicap promises a fair field, and probably Waitekauri, Fibre, and Hard Case may fill the places. The concluding race of the day—the Flying , Stakes—may produce a close struggle between Nellie, Stella, and Progress.
