The Ring.

News is to hand (says the London L.V.S. Gazette} that Jeff and Corbett have signed articles to fight “ on or about September 15,1900 ” Thus there will be plenty of time to pile on the agony and work up the boom. Let us hope that both men will take care of themselves, and avoid getting “ on the spree, ’ as so many successful scrappers unfortunately do. We do not favour matches made such a long way ahead, but this one seems to be straight enough, for each of the parties has deposited 5,000 dollars with “Al” Smith, of New York, which will be forfeited if either party fails to comply with the conditions of the articles. Queensberry rules have been agreed to, and the club offering the biggest purse on or before May 1, 1900, is to secure the fight. D. J. Tobin offered 50,000 dollars as soon as articles were signed ; but it is evidently hoped a better offer will eventually be obtained, for that amount was not accepted. If the fight takes place in New York city it will be limited to twenty-five rounds; if at Carson city it will be to a finish. Jeff’s side named Siler as referee ; but Corbett and his mob, objected to this experienced and straightforward man, and so the selection of referee is left open until May 1 next, when he is to be “ mutually agreed to.” It must be Siler. The winner will take 75 per cent, and the loser 25 per cent, of the profits.
