BOWLING

TBy

JACK HIGH]

The lack of counter bowling attractions and the necessity for getting as much practice as possible as the Tournament approaches, caused full musters at the various greens. Tournament teams might be seen, each individual”member vieing with his opponent in their efforts to show that their selection for that particular place in their team was the best that could be made. The afternoon was particularly unfavorable for really good play on exposed greens, as there was a very strong wind blowing, but notwithstanding this, some very enjoyable games were played. The coming contest will be looked forward to with immense interest, and the result is at present as uncertain as the size of King Dick’s.majority was before the numbers went up. There are rumours of some surprisingly strong combinations amongst the visiting teams, but we look to some of our Auckland men to render a good account of themselves. As in the meeting of our local teams in our friendly battles club against club, we detect the weak points in our play, so in a greater de • gree does each club profit by these larger gatherings. And this is not the only advantage gained by these yearly tournaments. They encourage and advance the great Freemasonary of Brotherhood of Bowlers, which is such a prominent feature of the game. It may be as well to mention here the conditions under which they are to be competed for. —Any members of the club which is affiliated with an Association may compete wearing the colors of his club. In the case of players outside the Auckland district rinks may be formed of bowlers who need not necessarily belong to any one club. Within the Auckland district rinks must be composed of members all belonging to one club. The reason of this distinction is not quite clear. Winners will play against winners to a final. The Association will chose the greens to he played on until the numbers are reduced to 20 players, when the Remuera Gre.n is to be the scene. BOWLING IN HAWKE’S BAY.
