ATHLETICS

[By

Vigilant.]

S. Rowley created a new Australasian record in the 220yds flat, on Saturday last, at Brisbane. His time was 22 1-5 sec.

McAffer justified his inclusion in the New Zealand team. He won the One Mile Walk, and was third in the Three Mile Walk. G. Smith made amends for his nonsuccess on the first day by winning the 440yds Hurdles on the second day. He won very easily in 61 sec. Jas. Te Paa won the Pole Jump very easily. He cleared 10ft Ilf in. Green field (Victoria) failed at 10ft 3in. Te Paa subsequently had a try at the Australasian record, which stands at lift OJin, but failed.

I am sorry to have to record the death of Alex. Armit, the crack Otago threequarter, who was injured in the OtagoTaranaki football match, on August 26. R. Brownlee, of Dunedin, champion long and high jumper of New Zealand, will be in Auckland, to compete at the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club’s Carnival, to be held in the Domain on Saturday, November 25. A sports carnival is to be held at Wanganui, by the Wanganui Athletic Club about February 10. At the autumn sports of the New York Athletic Club some excellent performances were accomplished. Kzaonglein won the 120yds hurdles in 15 3-ssec, and finished second from scratch in the Long Jump Handicap with 23ft IJin. The Hammer Throwing went to Flanagan, with a throw of 157 ft Bin. The Shot Putting was won by Sheldon with 44ft 11 Jin. M. W. Long won the 300yds Handicap in 31 2-ssec from scratch. The Standing Broad Jump was won by R. C. Eury who covered 10ft lOfin. G. W. Orton annexed the Two Mile Steeplechase Championship in 1 Imin 44 3-ssec.

A two mile race was decided at Bristol on September 9th between F. E. Bacon and the young Welsh professional runner, H. Cullum. Cullum led by three yards on the completion o£ the first mile, his time being 4min 30sec. Bacon here sprinted and gained a slight lead, but after a great tussle for two hundred yards Cullum again got in front. Bacon bioke down entering on the seventh lap and had to be carried off the track. Cullum went on and finished in 9min 58sec. A match was subsequently arranged be-

tween the men, to take place on September 30. The distance is to be 1000yds. The Victorian Amateur Sports Club is a flourishing institution. Those who were instrumental in its inauguration are to be congratulated on their untiring efforts in bringing it to a state of perfection.

“ It’s rather rough, isn’t it,” says the Queensland Sportsman, “to expect men selected to represent their colony to pay entry fees for the events ? This is being done by the Q.A.A.A. The men will have enough to do to provide themselves with special costumes, shoes, etc., not to speak of loss of time for training purposes. It ought to be a recognised rule that at A. A. A U. championship meetings competitors be entered free in intercolonial races.

An attempt is to be made in Sydney to form an athletic league for N.S.W. Stanley Rowley’s time for the 100yds championship at Brisbane is officially recorded as 9 9-10 sec. The Amateur Athletic Conference was held in Brisbane on Friday last. The balance-sheet was read and adopted. The officers were re-elected for the ensuing two years, and it was agreed to remove the headquarters to Sydney for the same period. The proposal to send a team to England and Paris during 1900 was discussed. Mr Coombes thought the cost for sending six men would be £9OO at the outside. A motion, deferring consideration for the present, was carried. This practicably leaves the matter open. The Waihi Rugby Union held its annual sports on the Recreation Ground, Waihi, on Thursday last. The weather was splendid, and fully 1200 people were present.
