Bowling.

Jack High.]

The Prince of Wales’ Birthday was commemorated at the Newmarket Bowling Green by a friendly tournament, wherein members from other clubs joined, the Remuera Club being largely represented, and a most enjoyable day’s bowling was the result. A finer day could not have been wished for, and all present declared that they could not desire a keener green. The results show that Ledingham’s team proved too tough for the opponents, and put them all down. These friendly tournaments are most. enjoyable, as from the manner in which the teams are drawn every bowler gets a chance of being in a good team. After the tournament game had been decided, a very closely - contested trophy game was played. In the first draw a team skipped by H. Brookes defeated Holden’s by one point only, while Hull’s team put Laxon’s through by one point only also. In the final Brookes was victorious by 4 points. A consolation game was then played for a trophy, which resulted in a victory for a team skipped by Culpan. The following are the scores FIRST DRAW. Stevenson, Allen, Beatty, Hull, skip, 19, v.Gamble, Perritt, Dingwall, A. Brookes, skip, 11. Garland, Cutler, Dingle, Ledingham, skip, 29, v. Spooner, Anderson, Holmes, Culpan, skip, 21. Lennox, A. Kent, C. G. Laurie, Southwell, skip, 24, v. H; Kent, Bose, Spreckley, Laxon, skip, 21. Brown, Cahill, Thomas, Holden, skip, 18, v. Bevans, McNeil, Clerk, Ruddock, skip, 14. SECOND DRAW. Garland, Cutler, Dingle, Ledingham, skip, 24, v. Stephenson, Allen, Beatty, Hull, skip, 15. Brown, Cahill, Thornes, Holden, skip, 18, v. Lennox, A. Kent, C. G- Laurie, Southewell, skip, 26. FINAL. Garland, Cutler, Dingle, Ledingham, skip, 23. v. Lennox, A. Kent, C. G. Laurie, Southwell, skip, 14. The following trophy games were also played: — FIRST DRAW. Stevenson, Gamble, Clerk, Holden, skip, 21, v. Brown, Allen, Rose, H. Brookes, skip, 22. Cahill, Spreckley, Beatty, Laxon, skip, 16, v. Bevins, Fletcher, Thornes, Hull, skip, 17. FINAL (11 HEADS). Bevins, Fletcher, Thornes, Hull, skip, 10, v. Brown, Allen, Rose, H. Brookes, skip, 14. A consolation game for a trophy was won by a team skipped by Mr Culpan.

THE AUCKLAND CLUB. Saturday last was a very unfavourable day for bowling, and it was only the best drained and highest-lying greens that the game could be indulged in without riski to the sward. On the Auckland Green there was no play, but the Match Committee held a meeting, and selected teams to practice for the Pennant Matches and Northern Bowling Association’s Tournament. Their selections were as follows :— Crawford, James, Handcock, Carlaw (skip) ; Mennie, McCallum, Perritt, Lambert (skip) ; Hegman, Gorrie, Edwards, Kings well (skip) ; Dingle, Thompson, Culpan, Ledingham (skip) ; emergencies, Dr King, Towsey, Haslett, Dr Hooper, Shackelford. THE NEWMARKET CLUB. On Saturday afternoon the attendance on the Newmarket Green was- naturally very poor, owing to the quantity of rain which had fallen in the morning and the attractions elsewhere. Two games only were played, with the following results : — No. 1 Rink: Collins, Garland, Wilson, Dr Laishley, skip, 21, v. Heron, Fletcher, Kilgour, May, skip, 20. No. 2 Rink : Tindale, Holmes, skip, 20, v. Wright, Spreckley, skip, 26. THE DEVONPORT CLUB. At Devonport three rinks were occupied —No. I and 2 by pairs, and No. 3 by a full rink. The feature of the afternoon’s play was the hollow way in which W. B. Eyre and Champion Harrison (skip) put through their opponents, GH. Brookes and M. Niccol in the pairs; and also how R. Eagle ton’s team walked away from that skipped by D. Miller, as the following results will show : — No. 1 Rink : W. B. Eyre, J. Harrison, skip, 32, v. G. H. Brookes, M. Niccol, skip, 8. No. 2 Rink : G. Glenister, Jones, skip, 25, v. J. Mitchell, Phipps, skip, 27. No. 3 Rink : McGlashan, J. Entrican, Woods, R. Eagleton, skip, 28, v. C. Dacre, Creeth, Lelievre, D. Miller, skip, 5. THE MOUNT EDEN CLUB. At Mount Eden two games were played, and afternoon tea was dispensed by Miss James. The following were the scores : — No. 1 Rink: Hooton, Mountford, Spooner, James, skip, 18, v. Esam, King, Newman, Pooley, skip, 17. No. 2 Rink : Eidy, Jonei?, Ross, Brookes, skip, 23, v. Hudson, Biimblecombe, Hoyte, Hooper, skip, 16. Bowlers are somewhat exercised in their minds over the present determination to play for the clocks presented by Stewart Dawson and Co. after the Northern Association’s Tournment is concluded. Much as they appreciate the generosity of the above firm in present-

ng the clocks, they think that it was too much to ask of the fraternity generally to prolong the tournament for three extra days, and increase the expense proportionately which has to be borne by the clubs. They claim, not altogether unreasonably, that if the firm abovementioned wished to have the clocks played for after the tournament, they should not expect bowlers generally to pay the piper. It would have been a much better arrangement to have given the clocks for competition by members not engaged in the tournament, to be played for during tournament week. Room could easily be provided on other greens, and the prizes would be much appreciated by those who had not the luck to be picked for tournament play. I trust this subject will be thoroughly discussed at the next meeting of the Association, in whose hands, I believe, the matter lies, subject, presumably, to consultation with Mr Holden.
