The so called Ponsonby team which journeyed to Aratapu last wbek suffered defeat by 19 points to 9. The players included Newton and North Shore men, and were generally a good lot, Mr Ohlson tells me that the play of W. Harrison at centre three-quarter and Phelan at five-eight’s was quite* a revelation. The pair worked like machinery, and Mr Ohlson is convinced that centre is Billy Harrison’s proper place. The game was a thoroughly intej esting one from start to finish, and the spectators witnessed a rattling good game. The Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union held its weekly meeting on Saturday night, Mr Weir in the chair. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to the hon. secretaries (Messrs Wilson and Firth), the ladies’ committee, and all those who had assisted to make the annual ball a success. The challenge shield, junior flag, and third cup were presented to the representatives of the winning teams —viz , Clive, Pirates, and West End —by Mr Weir (in the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr Logan), -who, in a neat speech, congratulated them upon their victory, which he considered was in each case well earned, the recipients suitably responding. There was a good number of footballers present, nearly every club being represented, and the utmost enthusiasm was evinced in the proceedings. Two members of the English football team, E. G. Nicholls and C. Y. Adamson, have settled down in Brisbane. With Nicholls in the threequarter line and Adamson at half-back, Queensland will be doing something big next season.
