Lacrosse.

[By

Coverpoint.]

The curtain has been lowered for the 1899 season of lacrosse. Last Saturday’s exhibition match could not be termed a complete success. The attendance was poor, and this was no doubt due to the fact tnat the match was not advertised properly Afternoon tea was not provided, as promised. I hear this was through an error on the part of the Tramway Company, who undertook to provide it. The game was fast and interesting throughout, though weak combination marred the play at times. The teams were captained by A. Major (Reds) and W. Noton (Blues). Saunders and Summer faced off, and clever play by Walker resulted in the ball being carried to Reds goal. A couple of hot shots were admirably stopped by Broughton. He then obtained possession and threw to the other end of the field. Noton centred play again, but Reds attackers got possession, and a good passing run ended in Major drawing first blood. The Blues were again on the aggressive, but Thompson changed matters a little. Play for the second twenty minutes was very even, both sides being very well matched. In the third quarter Hill obtained possession and passed to H. McCoy, who scored Reds’ second goal The Blues now put more vigour into their play, the Beds seeming to do the opposite. Lundon secured two goal by smart work, and Atkinson got one from a loose scramble. Mr P. Luckie was referee, and Messrs Richardson and Tizard goal umpires, and Messrs Patterson and Shaw line umpires. At half-time Pawnees (the winners of the championship) were presented with the handsome “ Kohn ” badges by His Worship the Mayor (D. Goldie), who complimented the winners for the consistent manner in which they stuck to their task, and eulogised the principle if the game. His Worship stated it was his intention of presenting trophies of a similar kind next season. Cheers were then given for the Mayor, Dr Erson (Mayor of Onehunga), who was also present, and Mr A. Kohn (the donator of the handsome silver badges). The smoke concert on Saturday evening promises to be a success A good programme has been arranged, and some of our best vocal talent will contribute.
