GISBORNE.

Return of Popgun— A Wellington Park mare —Tauhei—The Poverty Bay Hunt Club.

Gisbobne, August 26. Mick Maher returned from Christchurch with Popgun to-day. The horse looks none the worse for his exertions at the New Zealand Grand National Meeting. “ Mick ” informs me Popgun was going really well in the Sydenham Hurdles when he put his foot in a hole on the track which stopped him considerably, and, but for that mishap he feels confident Popgun must have won, as Ilex just beat him and was all out. Dick Butterworth has just got another addition to his string, viz., the Hotchkiss—Tasmania mare En-Hakore. This was one of Mr Te Kani Pere’s purchases at the Wellington Park sale four years ago, when that gentleman made six or seven purchases, Tauhei included. So far, the Hotchkiss mare has not shown much pace, but I do not think she ever had a fair chance, she not having had a proper preparation up to the present, however, if there is anything in Tasmania s daughter Butterworth will bring it out. “ Dick” still has Tauhei ratt’ing along doing real solid work.

The Poverty Bay Hunt Club had their final run for the season on Thursday last, there was a really good muster, 1 counted sixty-four at one of the obstacles. The hounds ran very fast, the pace soon finding out some of the jumpers whose want of condition *as very noticeable at the throw off. There were a number of “ sevens ” during the run, among those biting the dust were—Messrs Teat, Simpson (who turned out twice), W. Harding (who got a real daisy but not hurt), Master Charlie Parker (who got a severe shaking), and even the popular master, Jack Harding, got down for a rest, old Caitiff looking at him over the fence with amazement. Among the ladies I noticed Mrs C. White on Bishop, Miss Johnson on Angus, Miss Sherrelt on a creamy, and Miss Reynolds on Kildare, each of these ladies riding with great dash and as straight as the proverbial gun-barrel Frank Rhodes, the huntsman, rode 'Hard Cash, who jumped faultlessly, Mr O. Evans on Sleet and Mr H. Evans on Cezar who acted as first and second whips respectively, Mr Flack on Sirdar, Mr Crombie on Pharoah, Mr Griffiths on Kaitoa, and a number of others. The going was tip-top, and the closing run of the season was, I think, the best this year.
