CANTERBURY MODERATION LEAGUE.
It is very pleasing, indeed, to note that all the Church of England Clergy in Christchurch have not followed in the footsteps of the Bishops and decided to vote for 44 no license” at the next local option poll. Since the No License League was formed there his been considerable diversity of opinion among the clergy in the Canterbury province—a few supported the Bishop, a great many did not. Those who disagreed with the Bishop set to work and thought out something which they believed would serve the country just as well as 44 no license.” In short, they recommended that a league should be formed . to study the liquor question. At a representative meeting of Christchurch citizens on July 19. it was decided to form a Moderation League, which we believe has the sympathy of a large number of the Trade. A motion to exclude members of the Trade from membership was lost, the general opinion, as expressed very forcibly by the Rev. H. Northcote, being that it was to the interests of the liquor trade to support the objects of the League and help to promote any reasonable reforms. The election of officers resulted as follows :—Vice-presidents, the Rev. Canon Knowles and Mr F. Waymouth ; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. P. Cox; committee, the Revs. W. S. Bean (son-in-law of the Premier), F. Dunnage, F, R. Inwood, H. Northcote, and W. Dunkley, Messrs F. D. Neave, S. S. Blackburne, J. Enabling, Dr. Symes, and Major Slater.
