Mr C. K. 8. Gillies, the Auckland champion came over, says the Sydney Mail in the Mariposa for the championship meeting, and is to be followed by Mr Winslow, o c the same club. The Auckland club now possesses the best links in New Zealand, and has already spent £3OOO in acquiring them. A purchase of £l7OO was negotiated just before Mr Gillies left. Mr Gillies is hon. sec and leading spirit. He is looked upon as one of the very b'st players in his colony.. Although he has been unable so far to annex the New Zealand championship, he has usually succeeded in putting up a links record at each competition fjr it. Mr Macneil played with him at Auckland mt long ago, and on returning to Sydney expressed the opinion that, provided • he New Zealander was able to play here as he had played with him, he must win the Australian blue ribbon. The visitor was out at Bondi after arrival, and plaved in a threesome with Mr Macneil and the professional Scott. The amateurs received each two strokes from the professional, and the result was curious. Micneil beat Scott by two up and one to play, Gillies beat Macneil by two up and one to play, Scott beat Gillies by three up and two to play. In strokes Macne l was 73 for 17 holes, Scott 75 for 17, and Gillies 81 for 18, Scott confirmed the opinion brought over from New Zealand by the New South Wales champion that the Aucklinder is a first-

class player, and the form he showed after five days on the water, and on a first round of th® links, was remarkable. Mr C. E. S. Gillies won the New South Wales Golf Championship, on Saturday, after a tie with Mr Howden. In the play off Mr Gillies won easily. The success of the Aucklander was hoped for from his sterling performance the first time he went round the links.
