Our Illustrations.

This week the pictures illustrations are varied, and therafore extremely interesting. On the theatrical page there is an admirable portrait of Miss Maud Dalrymple, the talented contralto now singing at the Opera Hause with the Toy Concert Company. Throughout the tour in New Zealand Miss Dalrymple has pleased the critics and the public, and it is safe to say that the music-loving Aucklanders appreciate her singing quite as highly as the Southerners have done. The picture of Mr Leslie Dix, whose lamentable death occurred last week, is an excellent likeness. Leslie, who was a brother of Mr P. R. Dix, the well-known theatrical manager, was very popular as a humorous singer at one time, but latterly he had devoted his time to the commercial portion of his brother’s business. Mr Leslie Dix’s death will be keenly felt by his relations and many friends throughout the colony. We also give a portrait of Mr J. Lawrence, the latest addition to the ranks of the Auckland Banjo, Guitar, and Mandolin Club. Mr Lawrence will make his first appearance in Auckland as a banjo soloist bn Tuesday next at the benefit concert given by the club to Mr Arthur Toweey. The picture of Miss Georgie Devoe and Mr Chas. Faning, who are now (appearing at the City Hall, does these capable comedians justice. They have just concluded a six years, engagement with Mr Harry Rickards, and though they have only been „jn Auckland a short time they have quite established themselves in public favor.

Two very good pictures are those of the Karangahake footballers, who beat the Parnell Club on Saturday, and the Auckland Swimming Association’s officials and visitors at the recent swimming carnival. Our cartoon speaks for itself, and the photos, of Mr Maurice O’Connor and Mr W. Burnip dealt with on the Licensed Victuallers’ Page.
