ATHLETICS

|_By

Vigilant.]

The three-mile walking champion, D. Wilson, was married the other dav.

George Smith and G. Freeman ought to provide a capital race in the 100yds next Saturday at the Domain. The latter is only receiving 3|yds from the champion, and as some people think Freeman very little behind Smith the race should be close. L. Stedman, of Wanganui, has 2yds start, and if he runs up to expectations he ought to give the best of the runners a good go in the 100yds. There are a good many visitors amongst the competitors, so the sports are invested with more than local interest. H. B. Willis, of Wellington, who has syds in the 100yds and 17yds in the quarter-mile, is spoken of as a likely winner of the double. Huckstep put in a good performance in the one mile at the Exhibition track on Saturday night. He ran with excellent judgment, and worked his way to the front before the last lap was reached. Pearson made a great effort to hold the crack in the last circuit, but Huckstep spurted away and won by half a dozen yards in 4min 36sec. Against the tandem Huckstep had an easy win. He ran comfortably all the way, and ultimately won by something more than 100yds in 4min 45sec. Worrall, Somers, and Riley filled the places in the 100yds handicap on Saturday. The three heats and the final were well contested, Worrall winning the final by a few inches in lOsec dead. Creamer will compete in the two mile walk on Saturday. The acceptances are generally very good, and some very interesting sport should be witnessed. The first sports meeting of the Public Schools Amateur Athletic Association will be held in the Domain on Friday, the 17th inst. The entries closed on Saturday, and number between six and seven hundred.
