NOTES

Joe Patchen, the famous black trotting stallion, accomplished a great performance on October2o at Joliet, Illinois. Without any preparation for the trial he knocked nearly 4sec off the four wheel sulky record put up by W.W.P. in 1895. Joe Patchen was driven by Oscar Ames. The first quarter was covered in in the second the pace improved a bit, and the time returned was 31sec, the third* quarter was done in though the horse had to face the breeze, and the last quarter was left behind in SOJsec. At threequarters of a mile the time was so good that a fresh record was a certainty, and the vast concourse of spectators loudly cheered the horse long before he was straightened for home.

CHRISTCHURCH NOTES.

Lovers of trotting in New Zealand will probably have an opportunity of seeing the great Sydney horse Fitz, next Autumn, as J. A. Buckland has expressed his intention of making up a formidable team headed by the champion. He will probably bring the team, over in April; A meeting of stewards of the Canterbury Trotting Club was held on Saturday afternoon to consider the reply sent by the Colonial Secretary in the Bed of Stone case. The Minister had requested the Club to obey the ruling of the Association. With regard to the protest laid against Bed of Stone, on the ground that her name was on the forfeit list at the time of nomination, and that she was therefore ineligible to. start, the Association had ruled that the Club must pay out on Bed of Stone. A letter was received from Mr W. Price, the owner of the second horse Linda, protesting, on the grounds of inconsistent running and jostling, against the stakes being awarded to Bed of Stone. A protest had been made on the course, but had not previously been fully gone into by the stewards. It was decided to obey the request of the Colonial Secretary, and to consider the protest on account of inconsistent running and jostling on Monday next, December 20.
