THE ENGLISH TEAM IN AUSTRALIA.

The First Test Match. At the time of writing the first struggle between the representatives of England and Australia promises to be a one-sided affair. The match commenced on Monday, un. the Englishmen, winning the toss, gave a fine display of free cricket. They scored 337 for the loss of five wickets, and their ability to make runs proved that the wicket was in excellent order. Hayward made 72 by stylish cricket, his cutting and off-driving being specially good ; whilst Maclaren made runs all round the wicket until with his total at 109 he was out to a brilliant catch by Kelly, the wicket keeper.. He gave a magnificent display. Druce and Storer played vigorous cricket, but both were lucky. Banjitsinghi and Hirst took the score to 337, when stumps were drawn. On the second day “ Ranji” showed greatly improved form, and was last man out for a fine innings of 177. The other batsmen gave valuable assistance, and the total reached 551. McLeod was the most successful bowler, getting three wickets for 80, Jones took three for 130. and McKibbin one for 113. When the Auatralians went, in something like a rot occurred, and five wickets went down for 80 before Hearne, Richardson, and Briggs.
