THE L.V. PORTRAIT GALLERY.

In this present our readers with a portrait of Mr Thomas J. Burns, the popular host of tlie Empire, Timaru. Although an old resident of Timaru —having resided there for twenty years —it is only within the last three years that Mr Burns elected Io cater for the public. Know-

ing what was wanted, however, he has in this short time made the Empire a name for excellence in the hotel line. This hotel is built on the most modern and approved principles. The rooms—numbering thirty —are large, lofty, and tastily furnished, with good ventilators in every room ; the sanitary arrangements are perfect. In the billiard-room are .two first-class tables, one being an Alcock prize table—and a better one is not open to the public of New Zealand. In short, nothing is wanting which tends to the comfort and enjoyment of his patrons. Mr Burns takes considerable interest in cycling matters, and his house is the one in Timaru appointed by the*N.Z Cyclists Touring Club ; he is, also, vicepresident of the Timaru Tourists’ Cycling Club. We congratulate him on his possession of so good a house and wish him the success he so justly merits.
