THE L.V. PORTRAIT GALLERY.

This week we present our readers with a portrait of a popular Dunedin publican, Mr J. C. Short. We notice that our old friend has taken the Terminus Hotel at Dunedin. The Terminus, as its name implies, is situated at the Railway Station, just opposite the Triangle Gardens, and occupies a beautiful position. Three streets and the Triangle Gardens surround it. The gardens are one of the sights of Dunedin, being tastefully planted with trees and shrubs. The hotel itself is quite a new structure, the rooms are large and lofty, and it offers all the advantages of a first-class hotel at a most moderate tariff. Mr Short was for many years licensee of the Shades Hotel in Dunedin, and is well known throughout Otago. He is president of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association, a steward of the Jockey Club, and holds many public positions. A spirited investor in mining stock is Host Short, and director of half-a-dozen mining companies. Yachting is amongst his predilections, he being owner of the yacht Vigilante, and with her has scored six out of the seven events in which she competed. We heartily wish him success in his new venture. We mar mention (en parenthise) that Mr Short is quite a fancier in Skye terriers and owner of the champion dog (Bauches) of New Zealand. Anyone desirous of obtaining something really good in Skyes should not fail to communicate with him.
