CRICKET

INTER-PROVINCIAL CRICKET. Auckland v. Wellington. The Auckland representatives made a most successful commencement in their Southern tour bywinning the first inter-provincial match against Wellington rather comfortably. The match was started on Dec. 2nd, and- Auckland batted firstThe scoring at the beginning was very slow, but then matters livened up considerably. G. Mills was run out for 10, and Hay played freely for 17. Neill and I. Mills made a fine stand, and when the last-named was out for 32 there were only four wickets down for 132. Wynyard (17) and Ball (10) played fairly well, but the chief scoring was done by Neill, who played a slashing game, and looked as as if he was set for the century, but when his score was at 94 he was cleverly caught in the slips by Holdship. The innings finally closed for 221, and the Wellington men went in. Their effort fell far short of the visitors’, and they just saved the follow-on by getting 149. Of that number K. Tucker made 35 by good cricket. Levers, S. Tucker, and R. Gore -also played well. Hay obtained the extraordinarily good average of five wickets for 10 runs. On the second day the wicket had deteriorated considerably, and moderate scores were the order of the day. Auckland in their second innings were disposed of for 142, of which Cuff, by a fine exhibition, made 46. Ball also was in good form and was credited with 30, while the other doublefigure scorers were—G. Mills (18), Neill (13), and Wynyard (12). When the Wellington representatatives went in a second time they required to make 214 runs to win, and when Holdship and Worner made an early stand in the innings it looked as if the required number of runs would come. Holdship made 52, and Warren 31. After that the only other batsman to add materially to the score were K Tucker (23), Hales (14), and Holdsworth (13), the innings closing for 152. Auckland, therefore, won by 62 runs. The following are the scores : — Auckland. —First innings. Cuff, b Hales 3 G. Mills, run ou,t ... .. ... ••• ••• I.
