THE BETTING MARKET.

Although there has not been any very extensive speculation during the week on the Auckland Cup, the leading event of the Auckland Summer Meeting has not been neglected. The principal business has been done in doubles, backers generally seeking to commence with St. Paul and Mahaki for the Cup, and finishing off with St. Simon, Levanter, or Bombardier for the Steeplechase. St. Paul and Levanter are in such good odour that one punter, who cannot be reckoned a mug at the game, took as low as 50 to 4 on Monday evening about the double. Such a price, however, on two handicaps—one a flat race with fifteen hoises in it and one a jumping event—■ appears a false one. In straight-out betting St. Paul has been consistently supported for small amounts. Mahaki found one supporter the other evening who took 200 to 40 in one hand and wanted to go on at the same figure, but at the time the fielders were disinclined to take further responsibilities. Fabulist and Epaulet have both been nibbled at for small money at 8 to 1, but one substantial wager is reported at that figure about Day Star, and, notwithstanding the inexplicable infirmity of Castor’s son, it is said that the wager was taken by a friend of the stable. However, it should be remembered that fairy tales are often circulated in racing circles. Messrs McLeod and Cleland quote the following prices : — Auckland Cup. 3 to 1 Si. Paul 14 to 1 Haria 5 to 1 Mahaki 14 to 1 Pegasus 8 to 1 Fabulist 20 to 1 Lotion 8 to 1 Epaulet 20 to 1 Mantle 8 to 1 Day Star 20 to 1 Merry Maid
