THE NEW ZEALAND CUP.
[ By Atlas.] Fabulist ... ... ... 1 Lady Zetland ... ... 2 Euboclydon 3
The aid of dreamers as turf tipsters has been invoked, and even the hypnotist and fortuneteller have been appealed to for a ray of light with but little success. I, however, have been fortunate in having gained an interview with the Muse of Ellerslie, and this is what is supplied : — The bell rings out at Ricearton, and “ clear the course ” they cry, In,satin sheen, on the emerald green, the twentyfour glide by. Five anxious minutes. Then the tape flies up — away they go, The colours shine a wavy line in the sunlights golden glow. What’s that in front ? why Aidershot and reefing for his head, Euroclydon is back behind and the half mile is sped ; Captive and Lotion lead the ruck, well favoured as to weight, They’ll have a try to do or die before the final straight. Both Bellicent and Epaulet are striding bold and free,
While Tommy steers the big black horse, the hope of Mangare; Then past the stand a glittering band the winner none can spot, But critics vote and pressmen note the pace uncommon hot. They turn for home, ah I Captive’s done and Pompom’s going up, Stead’s pair are flogging, now or ne er is won JNew Zealand’s Cup ; See through the ruck with nerve and pluck the top weights deftly steer, Euroclydon and Fabulist their backers wildly cheer. ’Tis South and North are battling hard, then with a length’ning stride, The brilliant black flies o’er the track and will not be denied; In vain they whip, in vain they spur, he romps victorious on, My tale is told, maroon and gold, and FABULIST have won.
