McPherson; 38 Free Lance, 6.13 (inc. 31b over), Skeatee. The race is easily described. Lady Agnes rushed to the front, and soon after had a good lead, but when they had settled down, Pegasus was next, just clear of St. Kilda, as they passed the stand. Here Pegasus was reminded of his task, a couple of “ rib-binders ” from the midget on his back shifting the lazy son of Nelson. Going into the back stretch Lady Agnes showed no signs of tiring, and was ploughing through the heavy going right merrily, but Castleton started in real earnest on Pegasus just past the mile and a quarter post, and kept the whip going all the time, keeping in about the same position between Lady Agnes and St. Kilda. Going along the side the latter made a forward movement, and the crowd shouted the race was over, but a little further on he seemed to drop back, and when Pegasus got on terms with the leader, Lady Agnes, at about the turn into the straight St. Kilda came again, acr companied by Panoply and Tit, who made their efforts inside the distance. A great race up the straigot ensued, Pegasus being under whip punishment all the time, and j ust getting the verdict by a length, haff a neck between second and third , Tit fourth. Time, 2min 21see. When the field had settled down and passing the stand, Lady Agnes and St. Regel were just clear of St. Kilda and Peerless with Panoply next. Going along the back Peerless moved up to St. Regel and the whip was applied to the latter, blit he soon had to retire in favour of St. Kilda, whom Peerless and Panoply began to tackle, but the “mudlark” came along in rare style and shaking off all opposition won comfortably by three lengths, a length between second and third. Chaafe ; 13 Glenlora, 9.7, Olive ; 159 Ditto, 9.7, Frewin ; 14 Sterling, 9.7, Pennell The first time round the race track Ditto took up the running, followed by Clarence, Glenlora, and Sterling in single file. The first time over the water, this making once round, Glenlora was first, Ditto and Forella next, then Bombardier. The second time over the water the positions were—Clarence and Forella together, with Ditto, Bombardier, and Belle next, Donald McKinnon laying handy in the rear. In this round Hard Times stumbled at the sod and gorse jump at the top of the hill. Over the water jump for the “ third and last time ” the positions were very much changed, the light-weight division, who had been indulged with the lead, having dropped back a little. Forella was first over, just clear of Kildare, then Donald McKinnon, Belle, and Bombardier in a cluster; and when they got on to the race track it was soon discernable that the race, whr-h had been splendidly contested up to

this point, lay between Donald McKinnon, Bombardier, and Belle. Opposite the stand at the back of the course, where there was a hurdle to jump, Donald McKinnon showed out, but Bombardier was brought up to the Scotchman, but Ashdown had only to give his mount a couple of reminders and the race was over, the son, of the Dauphin winning comfortably at the finish by two lengths, Belle seven lengths away.
