Ellerslie Training Notes.

MONDAY. The work done on the tracks this morning was of a very ordinary character, and owing to yesterday’s welcome rain it was thought advisable to close the plough gallop. Considering the long spell of dry weather the trocks are in very fair order, although when the plough track is dry some of the trainers think the harrows should go a little deeper, as at present the bottom of the plough is very hard at times. The tan track affords excellent easy pacing. "Walter Wilmot was first to make a start this morning, and sent Lufra, who is looking a trifle light, twice round on the tan in company with Lottie’s two-year-old half sister, who spurted the last three furlongs, the youngster shaping very well. Haria did slow work. Doris went once round slow, finishing the last six furlongs at a good three-quarter i ace. Forma, with Joe Gallagher in the saddle, finished up the last seven furlongs of a once round at a good sound pace. The Hotchkiss mare is looking in the pink of condition. Panoply was sent twice round slow on the grass, and appeared a trifle sore. Tit started off once round slowly, and then jumped off and ran another circle at nearly threequarter speed. The little mare is in great heart, and should be handy in some of the minor events at the A.R.C. meeting. Romp was given similar work, and galloped in a. very taking manner. Webley ran twice round at a useful pace. J. Rae gave Kingswood three circuits at half pace, after which he took the mount on Black Friar, and had a go once round over the schooling hurdles. The St. Leger gelding jumped in a very slovenly manner, and will test the patience, of his trainer before he becomes a proficient jumper. Aughadowey also had a trip oyer the hurdles, and shaped nicely, doing two circuits. Nestor put in slow work, Anniversary and the Carbine filly, Quickfire, doing similar work. Lord Dunluce and Kathleen were apportioned two rounds at half pace. The former is looking well. Eye travelled two miles, finishing the last mile at a good sound pace. Merry Maid cantered twice round, accompanied by a likelylooking half-brother to Strike. The Sharper, Porangi Potae, and Linstock were restricted to slow work. After breakfast Economy cantered four times round, Vampire two slow rounds on the grass, and Woodstock cantered twice round at half pace, finishing up the last five furlongs fast. Captivity was schooled over the small hurdles, but will take a lot of schooling before she becomes a champion at the game. Grenadier was was also given a spin over the same hurdles, and shaped like a tradesman. TUESDAY. It was not over pleasant watching the work at Ellerslie this morning, owing to a drizzling sort of rain that came down at intervals, still there was some real good work done. George Wright’s campaigners, just returned from their Southern trip, were out, but of course were not pushed along. John Cbaafe commenced proceedings by sending St. Paul six furlongs on the grass at a medium pace. Pirate and Antares jumped off at the six-furlong post and brushed along at a smart pace, Pirate being in trouble at the finish. Lady Marion and Lady Cuisine (Lottie’s two-year-old half sister) ran an excellent five furlongs on the grass, the youngster holding her own very well. Day Star, who is in physic, was only trotted once round. Quickfire ran a good five furlongs at a strong three-quarter pace; then Stepfeldt, looking fresh after her trip, ran round twice at half-pace. Acone (with Joe Gallagher up) traversed two rounds at half-pace and wanted to go faster, but went on for another once round slowly. Free Lance was only cantered, and the same work was given Leona. Markinch and Peerless slipped twice round at a good threequarter pace. Bonovoree and Blackfriars were given two miles over the hurdles, Bonovoree jumping faultlessly and Blackfriars improved on his yesterday’s performance. Forma had all the best of Webley at the end of a six furlong flutter on the tan. Kingswood was allotted three miles on the tan. The Sharper and Porangi Potae were sent six furlongs at top, the former having all the best of the gallop. Doris was given two circuits on the tan, but did not pull up well. Three Star, pulling hard, put in two rounds at about three-quarter speed, and evidently enjoyed himself. Linstock and Bit o’Fashion were associated in a run of six furlongs, and, judging by the way the former was moving his “bellows,” the pace was not to the liking of the big horse. St. Regel trotted twice round on the grass. Eve and Adam travelled once round slow, then jumped off and ran another round at top, Adam having the best of the spin. The little mare does not seem herself just now, judging by her work. Retaliation and Merry Maid ran a mile and a half at top on the grass, both finishing together. Miss Nelson and Nestor were slipped for six furlongs on the tan, the colt moving in a lazy sort of manner, but kept time with his companion, running a good gallop ; at the end of the six furlongs, Miss Nelson went on for ar other round, finishing well. Nestor looks to be on the big side, and a couple of such gallops should key him up for his engagements. Kathleen and Fidget ran once round on the tan, the first seven furlongs being rattled off pretty merry. Silkworm was restricted to slow work. Old Malabar arrived at Fred Stennings’ last night, and is looking quite jaunty, and should give a fair account of himself in the Steeplechase. Tit was restricted to cantering. WEDNESDAY. The weather was fine at Ellerslie this morning, but the work allotted the different nags, taken right through, was of the usual half and threequarter pace kind. John Chaafe was again the early bird. St. Paul, St. Elmo, Antares, and Pirate, of his team, were sent together, doing slow work on the plough. Doris and Forma cantered for two circuits, finishing the last four furlongs at top. Acone put in two rounds at half pace, brushing home the last half mile.

Free Lance only cantered. Donald McKinnon ran about two miles, rattling along the last mile. Panoply ran six furlongs at top finishing fairly well. Lord Dunluce and Kathleen did two miles on the plough at half pace, Vampire putting in a similar distance on the grass. The Sharper had two rounds at half pace, finishing up strong. Romp put in two rounds, the first slow and ttie second at three-quarter pace, pulling up well. Linstock was restricted to slow work. Eve cantered a mile slowly, and then went on for. another mile at nearly top speed. Nestor, Miss Nelson, and St. Regel trot'ed once round, and finished up the last three furlongs pretty lively. Adam had a circuit at a strong half pace. Merry Maid did two at half pace, Lufra and Haria doing similar work. Retaliation was given two miles on the plough. Fidget and Porangi Potae put in slow work. Kingswood and Blackfriars put in useful work. Silkworm slipped once round at three-quarter pace. Peerless, Markinch, Wairangamai (Lottie’s four-year-old half sister) were cantering, and Bonovoree and Lady Marion were also taking things easy. After breakfast Kildare went two miles at a.g>od strong half pace, similar work being apportioned Ika who is looking a trifle light. Malabar, M - Kinnon in the saddle, galloped three miles at a good strong pace pulling up fairly well.
