GISBORNE RACING CLUB SUMMER MEETING.

[from our own correspondent.] The best of weather was experienced to-day (17th inst.), when the Gisborne Racing Club opened their Summer programme. ~ The judging of Captain Tucker gave general satisfaction, Captain Winter’s starting was up to that gentleman’s standard, and Mr Nasmyth discharged his secretarial duties with courteous ability. The racing commenced with the Flying Handicap of 60 sovs, six furlongs, for which your representative, Master Pat, was made a hot favourite. No one could see a winner in anything save in Master Pat, but as events proved they were sadly out in their reckoning. As soon as the flag released them Glauvena dsshed off with the lead, Perkin being next off, after whom came Master Pat and Wool Queen, Fidget being lengths away last. On entering the straight Chaafe tried to hustle along the Auckland horse, but though he gained on Glauvena his effort was of no avail, Mr Newman’s mare winning by a length from start to finish in 1 min 17J see, Perkin beating Master Pat in the last few strides for second place. Dividend, £4 Ils. There were eleven starters for the Catch Weights of 10 sovs, half amile, Mr T. Carroll’s Patu getting home by a head from Small Gun in 52 sec, paying £9 13s dividend. Disturbance was favourite for the First Hurdles of 70 sovs, two miles. A fairly good start was effected, T. Rose being a little bit left, but, as the result showed, this was no disadvantage to the Hiko — Primrose mare. Once fairly going Beauley was in the van, the favourite being next and then Worth and T. Rose. At the bend T. Rose improved her position, and at the back was leading by a length, and before the straight was reached she was three lengths to the good. Worth and Beauly tried hard to catch her in the fight up the straight, but the Napier mare held her own, eventually winning by an easy length, Worth beating Beauly by a neck for second money. The time was 4 min 4 sec, and dividend £4 7s. The First Hack Hurdles saw nine horses saddled up, Pekapu and The Drover being most in demand. Engoakuiri made the running at the start, and Pekapu jumping badly at the first obstacle was never in the race Once in the straight Caitiff came with an undeniable run and, smothering all opposition, won easily by half a length, Queen Bess being second and Engoakuri third. Time 1 min 58 4-5 sec, dividend £6 9s. The big event of the day, the President’s Handicap of 130 sovs, one mile and three-quarters, was judged a good thing for Captain Russell’s mare Krina, who was sent out a strong favourite, King Cannibal being second favourite. A very poor start saw Beauly away with an advantage, King Cannibal, Free Lance, and Monaco being next away. Beauly quickly gave place to Monaco, and passing the stand the order was Monaco, Free Lance, King Cannibal, Beauly, Lord Raven, and the favourite. At the back of the course King Cannibal went to the front and was never headed, and though Lord Raven made a big effort in the straight King Cannibal reached the post first a length to the good, the favourite gaining third position. Time 3 min 13| sec, dividend £3 13s. Poinsettia was sent out favourite for the First Handicap Hack Race but had to strike her colours to Dan O’Counell, who got home from the mare by a neck in 1 min 18| sec for the six furlongs, and paid a dividend of £36 ss. Duncan Gray was third. The Shorts Handicap of 30 sovs, five furlongs, proved an easy win for Nightingale, who went out a rank outsider and romped home a winner in 1 min 4| sec, paying a £26 17s dividend. The last race, the Park Stakes Handicap, of 50 sovs, one mile and a distance, saw the only favourite of the day get home, Pororua getting home after a ding-dong race by a neck from Lord Raven, after whom came Glauvena. Time 2 min 3 1-5 sec, dividend £3 Is. Beautiful weather was again granted for the second day’s racing. The sport opened with the County Stakes Handicap of 45 sovs, seven furlongs, for which Flirtation and Pororua were level favourites. The first-named obtained the best of the start, Pororua getting all the worst of it. The latter quickly made up her disadvantage and raced in company with Flirtation until the straight was entered. Right up the straight they were neck and neck, and when they passed the box no one could anticipate the decision of thejjudge, who gave Flirtation the verdict by a nose. Avis was close up third. Time 1 min 32 sec, dividend £2 13s. Zillah was successful in the Second Hack Handicap, winning with the greatest of ease from start to finish, Napper being second and Too Blue third. Time 1 min 46 3-5 sec, dividend £6 Ils. The favourite Bull Dog, was never in it. The Stewards’ Handicap of 50 sovs, one mile, was reckoned a good thing for Lord Raven, but the outsider, Cocheco, won a hard race by a length, the favourite being second and Free Lance third. Time 1 min 45 3-5 sec, dividend £7 12s. The Second Hurdles of 60 sovs, one mile and three-quarters, fell to Worth, Beauly being second and T. Rose third. Time 3 min 28 sec, dividend £5 Ils. Caitiff was again successful in the Second Hack Hurdles, one mile, beating Baldier, Queen Bess, and three others in 1 min 57 i sec, paying a dividend of £3 10s. The principal event of the day, the Grand Stand Handicap of 80 sovs, one mile and a distance, was contested by a quartette, King Cannibal being named a hot favourite. At the start the public pick got a bit of an advantage, Lord Raven being next away, and then came Free Lance and Flirtation. Round by the bend the last-named ran in front, but four furlongs from home the favourite moved up and in the straight he appeared to be winning. At the distance Free Lance challenged the favourite, and racing very gamely gained the post half a length in front of him, Lord Haven being third. Time 2 min 1 1-5 sec, dividend £5 18s. Hop Garden proved successful in the Disposal Stakes, seven furlongs, Patea being second and Herbertthird. Time 1 min 34s sec.,..dividend £3 12b,-

The last race of the meeting, the Forced Handicap of 30 sovs, one mile, was won by Pororua in 1 min 46 sec, Poinsettia being second and Coclicco third. Dividend £4 2s.
